As I promised last week we have something special tonight. Normally I limit my selections to anything prior to 1760 — well tonight we break that caveat.

Friedrich Julius Reubke (March 23, 1834 – June 3, 1858) was a student of Franz List and died of TB at age 23. Tonight we’re going to hear his monumental work Sonata on the 94th Psalm. It is a long piece filled with the drama of the 94th Psalm. Its four movements coincide with the biblical text.

For your convenience I’m including the text for those unfamiliar with this particular Psalm…Warning—it is NOT a happy happy joy joy Psalm–it is a warning to the wicked, evil and iniquitous:

    Psalm 94King James Version (KJV)

94 O Lord God, to whom vengeance belongeth; O God, to whom vengeance belongeth, shew thyself.

2 Lift up thyself, thou judge of the earth: render a reward to the proud.

3 Lord, how long shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked triumph?

4 How long shall they utter and speak hard things? and all the workers of iniquity boast themselves?

5 They break in pieces thy people, O Lord, and afflict thine heritage.

6 They slay the widow and the stranger, and murder the fatherless.

7 Yet they say, The Lord shall not see, neither shall the God of Jacob regard it.

8 Understand, ye brutish among the people: and ye fools, when will ye be wise?

9 He that planted the ear, shall he not hear? he that formed the eye, shall he not see?

10 He that chastiseth the heathen, shall not he correct? he that teacheth man knowledge, shall not he know?

11 The Lord knoweth the thoughts of man, that they are vanity.

    12 Blessed is the man whom thou chastenest, O Lord, and teachest him out of thy law;

13 That thou mayest give him rest from the days of adversity, until the pit be digged for the wicked.

14 For the Lord will not cast off his people, neither will he forsake his inheritance.

15 But judgment shall return unto righteousness: and all the upright in heart shall follow it.

16 Who will rise up for me against the evildoers? or who will stand up for me against the workers of iniquity?

17 Unless the Lord had been my help, my soul had almost dwelt in silence.

18 When I said, My foot slippeth; thy mercy, O Lord, held me up.

19 In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul.

20 Shall the throne of iniquity have fellowship with thee, which frameth mischief by a law?

21 They gather themselves together against the soul of the righteous, and condemn the innocent blood.

22 But the Lord is my defense; and my God is the rock of my refuge.

23 And he shall bring upon them their own iniquity, and shall cut them off in their own wickedness; yea, the Lord our God shall cut them off.

That’s quite a legacy he left behind.

Beautiful as always Pete. Dark, almost sinister. I always wondered how composers take biblical passages and turn them into something like this.

And thanks for making it a separate link so I could read the verses as I listened. Am listening.

Thanks man. Yes its interesting to think about this guy being capable of such a thing at his age. When I was that age all I could think about was booze and chicks—I guess he had a much more serious mind than I. Of course Mozart died very young as did Pergolesi and Alain 28 and 30 something. And the great Henry Purcell.

I also consider Nicolaus Bruhns 1665 – 1697, dead at 32. Very VERY few of his works survive to this day. (Maybe I’ll pay homage next week) Interestingly Bruhns, Bach and Handel at various times studied under the Great Dieterich Buxtehude, and of the three Buxtehude considered Bruhns the top of the heap. I read somewhere that he would often compose at the organ keyboard playing the bass line with the pedals while playing a violin, and singing. SHEEEEESH! The guy has more talent in his pinky than I do in my whole body.

I suspect my offering this week was a bit to long and way to intense—but for the guys who have never been exposed to this kind of music its good that they at least know it exists, even if it doesn’t turn their crank…they can name-drop at a c~~~tail party and amaze everyone.
