I believe this is biologically built into women. Not just in human species, but other species as well.
For example, a male lion or two reign over the bunch of females, making up a pride. At some point, competing males will come to challenge the old kings. At some point, the old king is chased off or killed. The new kings usually kill the cubs. This causes the lionesses to go into estrus and they get ready to mate with new male lions.
