It often bothers me that I am not better with numbers. Each and every time I learn to read a tape measure, I have to go back and learn it again. Its horrible. So many things in my life would be better if I could just remember numbers and information. It always seem like I understand so much, but am just missing the finishing trim, or the icing on the cake.

There has to be different sections of the brain’s hemispheres that handle memory functions. Why is Anger and anguish so readily recalled at times. But so often forgotten about if that makes sense?

I am going to find some more Adderall. The good stuff. I was able to focus so well. But then it made me see CLEARLY what the hell had been going on with my life. I am looking for more natural items, but have not found anything that quite does the trick.

My question is, do you think that mathematics ability has final outcome to intelligence?

I’m not saying I will be like Wizards Pupil one day, or Faust. But BOY it sure would be great to be in the cool kids club.

Do what you can with what you have and don’t sweat about wherever anybody else is at. Plenty of “non-numbers” guys do just fine.

Have you ever noticed that many people that are “intelligent” appear to lack common sense?

For example, the person that can afford an $800.+ per month LEASE Payment on a Cadillac Escalade would appear to need excellent credit as well as very good paying job. One would have to guess that your average person entering into a contract such as this must have a position that requires a certain amount of “intelligence” to be compensated to the point that they can “make the payments”, but how much common sense does this person have???

How many Men are very intelligent and hold down very good paying jobs that will get married/divorced MULTIPLE times?

How many of these Men will Start a SECOND Family well into their forties or even fifty’s?

How many “engineers” can’t perform simple home repairs/improvements?

There are some wonderfully skilled tradesman that decide to work for themselves only to discover that they make horrible businessmen.

Few people have what I would call the “total package”. They are the exceptions and not the rule.

Have you perhaps thought that the problem is that the Aderall doing you no good, for it fogs your mind and clouds your judgment, iMickey?

What does the trick perhaps would be some more exercises, a little bit more time breathing better air, and perhaps a few extra times doing nothing?
Whatever you have to take in order to “increase your mind” is doing the exact contrary of what it should be doing. No drugs are good for you, for all of them may leave you dependent on them.

And you are a cool guy in your own way, iMickey… No need for you to feel bad because you can’t do math like Faust or Wizard, if you weren’t one of the “cool ones”, your post would not be appreciated as they are. So don’t bother. Keep doing what you do, things are damn fine the way they are!

I have the same problem with Mathematics. I was also never taught it properly by female teachers who instead neglected me and punished me for being a boy.

Some people are brilliant with writing and art ….. some are brainiacs with numbers…

Yep. The idea that you can rank intelligence, or the ability of someone’s brain, with a single number…is kind of nonsensical to me. It’s like trying to specify someone’s athletic ability with a single number ranking, which we all know is nonsense.

I’m sure the DR’s will tell me I’m wrong, but you’re ability to do cognitive tasks is going to be based off your natural ability for a given task as well as how well trained or practiced you are at the task. Writer’s, artists, mathmaticians all get better at the given tasks the more they practice their trade. However, some of use are never going to be great at it, but likely better than if they never worked at it at all.

I have little doubt that Dr’s have better memories after going through med school than before, or perhaps they get better at filtering out useless information that’s not worth remembering. I seem to remember most things, but have trouble retrieving the information when I need it. Good with math, logic and spacial concepts, not so good at writing. Would be absolutely atrocious at sales or any kind of customer service.

    Ok. Then do it.

I have mostly thrown out the inches and feet .. all I carry is metric tape
everything is based on ten ..

10 times easier to use and read and remember.

Just as accurate (or more accurate) for my woodworking
and so much easier than fractions of those portions of inches. I even use metric tools and bits and things now for same reason.

only need to remember is that

10 millimeters = 1 centimeter (so if your measurement is 20 mm, that would be 2 cm)
    and I also remember that
100 centimeters = 1 meter (and for reference, a meter is just slightly longer than a traditional yardstick)

Metric is good for when you want to tell a woman you can give her 12, and she is thinking inches and you mean centimeters.

Not to knock intelligence, because it certainly doesn’t hurt for a person to have a high IQ, but creative thinking, common sense, and wisdom can take you just as far most of the time, if not farther. I found at work that I solved the most difficult, mysterious problems not with logic or number crunching but quantum leaps of intuition.

Also, there are a host of miscellaneous niche skills that can be very useful, such as musical ability or reading really fast. I read about 8-9,000 WPM, which helps in a lot of ways.

I’m bad at math (and spelling too).

I think a lot of mental skills are like muscles in the body, either use them or you lose them.

As such, I ‘exercise’ my math skills every day when I drive to and from work.

I simply try to add and multiply the license plates of the vehicles in front of me and around me on my commutes as fast as I can.

I know for a fact that this has helped me with my math skills. Give it a try.

Exactly. Most people are a one trick pony. They’re good at one thing but suck at everything else. Society has made us this way. We’re way too specialized to be self sufficient.

I’m not saying I will be like Wizards Pupil one day, or Faust. But BOY it sure would be great to be in the cool kids club.

I’m sure some of it has to do with IQ, but mathematics ability is like anything else. You have to practice in order to get good at it. When I was at college that was my pinnacle of mental math. Even my professors were impressed because I could solve the problems with out showing any work. That came from about 8 years of almost daily practice. Sometimes 8 hours a day just doing math and reviewing proofs of famous problems.

Now I suck at Math, compared to back then. At least in quickness of calculation. I have to really think about the problem first.

The more abstract part of mathematics comes into the logic and reasoning in order to solve problems. This is the mentality that leads you to prove out a theorem. Recognize patterns and identify solutions. That kind of thinking, once you learn it stays with you forever. You learn how to think in a mathematical way. The ability to prove something is true just using your mind powers. A valuable skill that anybody can learn with enough practice.

There does seem to be a genetic component to intelligence as well. Everybody has a limit to how good than be and some people like Carl Gauss have a much higher limit than the others. Will I ever arrive at solutions as quick as say Nikola Tesla? No, but I may arrive at the same solution eventually. If you use the Logic and reasoning correctly it may take you 10x as long, but you will arrive at absolute truth. That’s the beauty of mastering the deeper lessons of mathematics. Its so much more than just memorizing flash cards like they told us in Elementary School.

If you are worried about low scores in “school” do not worry. Grades have been rigged against boys. It is not your fault.

It use to be most of the annual grade for students were from tests, which boys were better at. Now, most of the annual grade is from “homework”, this benefits girls as they copy each others homework. While at the same time schools do their best to prevent boys from having friends.

If students copies each others answers during a test this would be called “cheating” and would not count, but as long as it is out of sight, with girls getting the benefit from doing so, this is called “teamwork”.

So much so, that the words genetic and intelligence share the same root. As does the word Genius.

    “Gen”

And yes, that is totally racist. Or as I like to say, racialist.

The word “Gen” means the tribe/race of European WHITE people. But you’ll be hard-pressed to find that on google or wikipedia or the usual suspect web pages that are scrubbing white people’s culture, of course. You’ll have to go to a library to verify it but eventually you’ll find … it’s true!
