How our immune systems could stop humans reaching Mars

The astrophysicist Neil DeGrasse Tyson commented that ‘dinosaurs are extinct today because they lacked the opposable thumbs and brainpower to build a space programme’

Yet although we now have the technological ability to leave Earth, scientists have found another stumbling block to colonising new worlds – our own immune system.

Although it is said we are all made of ‘star stuff’ when it comes to travelling away from our home planet humans are far more vulnerable to the rigours of space than our interstellar origins might suggest

Billions of years of evolution has effectively backed mankind into a corner of the Solar System that it may be now be tricky to leave.

A team of scientists from Russia and Canada analysed the effect of microgravity on the protein make-up in blood samples of 18 Russian cosmonauts who lived on the International Space Station for six months.

They found alarming changes to the immune system, suggesting that they would struggle to shake off even a minor virus, like the common cold.

“The results showed that in weightlessness, the immune system acts like it does when the body is infected because the human body doesn’t know what to do and tries to turn on all possible defense systems,” said Professor Evgeny Nikolaev, of Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology.

The effects of spaceflight on the human body have been studied actively since the mid-20th century and it is widely known that microgravity influences metabolism, heat regulation, heart rhythm, muscle tone, bone density, the respiration system.

Last year research from the US also found that astronauts who travelled into deep space on lunar missions were five times more likely to have died from cardiovascular disease than those who went into low orbit, or never left Earth.

Astronauts are fitter than the general population and have access to the best medical care, meaning that their health is usually better than the general population. Those of comparable age but who never flew, or only achieved low Earth orbit, had less than a one in 10 chance of death from cardiovascular disease.

But the chance of death rose to 43 per cent for those who reached the Moon or deep space, probably because of the impact of deadly space radiation
However, until now the molecular mechanisms which drive the physiological changes caused by space flights has remained a mystery.

To gain a deeper understanding of the changes in human physiology during space travel, the research team quantified concentrations of 125 proteins in the blood plasma of cosmonauts.

Proteins change as the immune system alters and so can be used as a measure of how it is functioning. Blood was taken from the cosmonauts 30 days before they travelled to the ISS and then on their immediate return to Earth. They were also tested seven days after touchdown. Individual proteins were then counted using a mass spectrometer.

”When we examined the cosmonauts after their being in space for half a year, their immune system was weakened,” said Dr Irina Larina, the first author of the paper, a member of Laboratory of Ion and Molecular Physics of Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology.

“They were not protected from the simplest viruses. We need new measures of disorder prevention during a long flight.
“We must understand the mechanism that causes disorders. If we find the pathways that are affected by the weightlessness, we will be able to find the target for the remedy and we’ll be able to offer new pharmaceutical products that will prevent these negative processes.”

The research was published in the journal Nature Scientific Reports.

I am having a hard time believing that this is all of it. I am not saying it isn’t true, but what is to say that some of this isn’t from the entering and exiting the system at the high velocity, through a radiation belt. What is to say that the shielding is doing all that we think it is. I think there are factors that are not being considered.

Some of these things, however, is likely due to the fact that gravity is key to our circulatory system. Without gravity, the heart has to work so much harder to push the blood through, that would essentially use gravity and muscle use as assistance for the flow. Without gravity, there is no downward force, and you use your muscles less.

I Agree, if we’re going to make it into outer space and on to Mars men will have to design space crafts with artificial gravity! Which means we’re not about to see a Mars Mission anytime soon! At least not during my life time!

    F~~~ mars, leave it alone.

    I ain’t paying taxes for that s~~~.

What’s the point, i am going to mars??? Of course not.

    For development and future generations? F~~~ it, I don’t give a f~~~.

    Leave mars alone.

To those following me, be careful, I just farted. Men those beans are killers.

Don’t worry it ain’t happening that’s what the scientists are starting to understand! I bet you didn’t even read the article Carnage.

men will have to design space crafts with artificial gravity!

Yea, like spinning the space craft and then using centrifugal force as an artificial gravity. I don’t know why they aren’t using that already? (maybe they want to learn effect of zero gravity but anyway)

There is nothing different between acceleration and gravity physically. centrifugal force is just a constant acceleration perpendicular to the movig direction so it is a round path.

Spacecrafts are built in pieces, tubular, modular. The international space station was built piece by piece like that! it would require a new approach to design something that artificially creates gravity like in the sequel 2010 for example! A Lot of Dough! It would have to be shipped / built in space, just imagine the Logistics!

We could always make a new immune system.

Humans heading to Mars will be together 2 years minimum. 4-5 people. Alone. With each other only. They will have swapped every germ they have by Day 30. They will have trained together for a year. By Day 60 there is no germ anyone has the others have not seen.

Exactly where will they get these new germs that their immune systems will not be able to handle?

First thought that comes to mind is.. basically it means that their bodies wont be able to fight off any germs upon their arrival back on earth! Basically a death warrant for whomever embarks on such a journey!
