How does one get tough with a nation and have good relationship with them?

It is possible to have a child, and you are a parent. You get tough with them, and out of need, they will still respond, and you have a good relationship. But, how does this work with nations?

Let’s say Trump did say he was going to be tough with Russia, but wants to have good relationship? Why would any nation seek to have good relationship with another nation that will be tough with them? How does this work? Can someone explain it to me? Isn’t the term “make someone your biatch”? There is also Balkanization. But nations that are Balkanized do things out of fear, and are puppet states. How does the United States do this with Russia, or China, or anyone else, unless they are a puppet state, sucking on financial support? Is this Russia?

You probably can be tough and have a good relationship provided that one half is a lot weaker than the one being tough and the weaker is wanting something from the tougher one.

How does one tough nation be tough with an equally tough nation? We have already seen that, it was called the Cold War and the USA and USSR fought each other mostly indirectly via Vietnam, Afghanistan and lots of propaganda.

The West won but oddly enough the politics of the USSR is now the ruling politics of the West. Go figure.

That’s an insightful question.

All relations in the past (before WWI) were between rulers.

Since the League of Nations and then the United Nations appeared the relation between nations was codified as International Law.

This is upheld by all UN Charter members since it provides a platform for trade, immigration, religious and cultural tolerance etc etc.

If a country wants to be tough – it can exert pressure in two ways – first stay within the UN framework and other related bodies like the WTO, IMF and BIS as examples – and take the other country to a legal settlement. Or if a country is a military threat the UN may impose sanctions or military action. This does not work well now as the US controls the UN Security Council – which does all the heavy lifting.

The other way is just tear up any agreements and threaten the other countries directly. This ends up in either trade wars or shooting wars but usually the UN ends up a lame duck anyway.

So at the moment there is really no clear way to resolve anything.

Good relationships are based on respect. If you’re a pussy, nobody respects you. Bad people will take your s~~~ and good people will f~~~ with you just to toughen you up.

So “getting tough” with someone, from the perspective of people who are themselves already tough, means that you’re showing you’re not a pussy (btw, having pussies around endangers everyone which is why strong people don’t like pussies) and that makes you worthy of respect which makes everyone feel more comfortable around you which results in better relationships.

Not just respect here. One can have respect among peers. I can respect someone, but not want to have anything to do with them. I go my own way. Relationship would end up being formally decent, but there is an undercurrent of hostility. Usually, at most as I see it, one “gets tough” by just leaving all connections with someone, or something, until better terms can be negotiated and agreed to. Respect comes from better terms.

How does this work with nations though? Like, the context of “getting tough” with Russia is making them see consequences of their action. Like any nation, Russia does what it sees is in its own interests. To oppose this will cause the relationship to go south.
