I recently got a VHS/DVD combo player and i have alot of old tapes so i am wondering how do i convert them to my computer or to DVD?

I wanna do this while the tapes still last alot of the tapes i have are over a decade old and i want to get them on my computer before they die or get in too bad of shape. Also i am a poor bastard who hates DVD’s as a format and i don’t want to rebuy the films i had back then again.

first of all, is the content on your tapes available. old tv shows are on the network web pages, hulu, putlocker and vidme, daily motion.

Get a capture card for your PC and connect it from the VCR output while it’s playing. On the PC you’ll need a program capturing the input.

If you’re converting commercial tapes you may need something to filter out the Macrovision copy protection garbage though.

Most yes but some no but even if it all are online i still like to transfer the tapes to a computer.

For example some rare tapes and family tapes are not saved to the computer.

I have done this, and digitized hundreds of hours of Video tape to DVD over the years.

    1. You can pay someone to do it by taking to a place that will digitize your tapes. It’s pretty expensive.

    2. If you have a good playback deck you can play the tape into your computer and “video capture” it using video capture software. You can buy a little box from Radio Shack that will accept the RCA video/audio plugs from the VCR and pipe it into your computer’s software. Just ask them how.

The process is simply playing it back through your computer and capturing it. (this is my preferred method) By today’s computer standards most any machine is capable of handling this with no problem. Back in 2002 , you needed a very good machine to do it. It would be a joke today.

    • VHS is 640×480 pixels (4:3 ratio) broadcast video with interlaced frames.
30 frames per second. (29.97 to be exact)

    • DVD is 720×540 (4:3 ratio) with interlaced frames – also 720×404 (16:9 ratio “letterboxed”)
Also 30 frames per second. (29.97 to be exact)

If you can upscale the capture to 1280 or (720p digital video) , then you’re golden and will have the best possible capture of the VHS. But the DVD standard is all you really need.

You really just need to get the video signal into your computer.
And the software to record and save.

Once you have the video digitized, then you can compress it for DVD (the MPEG 2 video standard). Any video software can do this…… but you need special software to author DVDs themselves . that’s probably the most complex part of the process because DVDS can have very complex menus.

If you keep doing what you've always done... you're gonna keep getting what you always got.

I used to do this for many years, because I had a ton of VHS tapes I didn’t want to buy all over again in DVD.

1 Get a video capture card or external device that plugs into the VCR and PC.

2 Capture the input by pressing the red record button while the tape is playing. When it’s over, press it again, name the file.

3 Take it to a video editor and make editing choices.

4 Take it back to the video capture software (they usually have DVD burn features) and import the video file and press burn. Wait about an hour.

It can be a lot of work, but if you don’t want to buy your movies all over again, then it’s worth it.

To convert to DVD you can get a combo player like what you have, except the DVD side is actually DVDRW so you can record on the DVD what is playing on the VCR.

To get VCR onto your TV you need an old school capture card or USB capture device with RCA jacks on it and recording software.
