How do dictators keep power?

I have always wondered about this…

if some despot is in charge then how do they manage to keep power? Is it that they keep the police/army well fed and paid so that they stay on their side? rely on people to grass on fellow citizens(we all know those types of people)?

I am just wondering as NK is the main topic in the news at the moment – the people are starving and treated like s~~~ but still allow Kim’Jum’whatever to stay in power

“divide et imperat” – the Romans already knew, in order to stay in power you need to seperate your opposition.
Same worked within the slavery ages, google “Lynch letters”.

in your example, you don’t feed the police well, you want them to stay hungry, but you feed them just a little bit better than the others and you make sure either of both groups know this. The police will stay loyal to you in order to protect their privilege, the others will hate the police for being privileged.

Culture

In an oligarchic currency system (US & the EU) – you need to be a puppet or a broker for the banking system. And protect them. And lie and cheat for them.

In a dicatatorship (like NK or China) you are the banking system
The banking sector answers to you. You must also be able to have the support of a certain proportion of the people.

However culturally Europeans and East Asians are totally different. Asian countries would not be able to effectively provide a democracy.

This is nothing to do with good or bad.The mindset is different.

This is how it has been and how it still is.
Both are only the illusion to control resources and mindset – but suited to their culture base.

You can start by taking all citizen’s weaponry.

Then Setup a military class loyal to you and your family.

Establish an oligarchy where all economic and political matters will be bound by you.

And the rest is controlling the food and money supply.

And of course always have the invisible or imaginary boogeyman present just in case.

I think fear is needed. Fear and uncertainty. Otherwise 99% of the people will walk over you just as soon as they think they can.
