Highlights: 61% of 18-29 year old SUPPORTED the war vs 52% of the general population. Rather odd, given they — the Youth — and their young friends would be doing the dieing. Support decreased with age, going down to 44% favoring in the over 65 age bracket. Conclusion: Young people, IN GENERAL, are easily brainwashed by the Ministry of Truth.
They weren’t so easy to brainwash in the Vietnam ear, though, were they? Quite a generational turning!
An equal percentage of the under $30K income bracket and $30K-$75K family income bracket supported the war: 55%. While $30K – $75K isn’t ‘rich’, there was equal support in what I would consider ‘poor’ (under $30K) and ‘middle class’. So I would disagree with your basic thesis that poor people oppose stupid wars; a majority of poor and middle class people supported this stupid war.
The number AGAINST the war went from 38% in the under $30K group to 40% against in the $30K – $75K group. That doesn’t surprise me. There is a trend with higher income and especially higher education, to be anti-War and further Left. One of the few redeeming features of the Left is its animosity towards pointless wars.
The older citizens have seen the horror of war, and thus, were not as susceptible to the Shrub’s brainwashing.
I object to the term ‘imperialism’ even though this is the accepted term. Imperialism, to me, means conquering territories who then pay tribute. It’s a lucrative business. The UK made a lot of money off India — until they had to bail it out — the East India Company — the original ‘too big to fail’ — and what happens when you give a corporation a Private Army.
And of course, the Romans taxed conquered lands too. The American imperialism, in contrast, only imperils the nation; we gained no revenue from Iraq, Afghanistan, Vietnam, or Korea. We instead, lost lives and treasure.
The idea of treating Jews as monolithic, is absurd. Timothy McVeigh bombed the Murrah [federal] building killing many children in a nursery. He’s white. Thus all whites are mad bombers. Thus all whites are terrorists. Or, Huey Newton (black Panther leader) was a terrorist, so all blacks are terrorists. Do you see the fallacy in this logic?
Get away from identity politics. DON’T answer questions such as ‘what is my race’, or check ‘Other’ and write in ‘Human’. These questions are meant to pose various identity groups against each other. They should not even be asked on our census, whose LEGITIMATE purpose is to apportion representatives, not ask intrusive questions about our lives.
I don’t get my identity from my skin color, but from my experience and the culture around me.
Many persecuted minorities identify with other minorities that have faced persecution or genocide.
Nationalism is more often than not, ugly. The soldiers in the 1914 Christmas armistice should have turned around, shot their own officers and politicians, and made peace with each other rather than fight for the ‘Glory’ of their respective countries. I understand fighting for freedom against others trying to conquer you, but were we fighting for freedom in Iraq? Or protecting our borders?
