I’m surprised they’re still using semi-submersibles. Been hearing about those for over 6 years now, surprised they don’t have actual subs yet.

The Cartels have been using home-made submarines for years to traffic drugs. Some of these do travel underwater by a few feet, but the drivers are exposed to the engine exhaust in these make-shift submarines and have to surface for fresh air..

Semi-submersibles are cheaper, far more easier to build, easier to pilot, etc. Most are towed to launching point much like IJN “kaitens” late in WW2.

Too expensive, even for drug cartels. Narco subs are thought of as one-way delivery systems; one trip more than pays for construction and any others are just gravy.

The need to quickly unload them also limits their size which in turns limits their capabilities.

Crazy and half-assed, sure, but it also works. The Tamils built and used similar cheap vessels to smuggle guns and munitions into Sri Lanka for decades during their rebellion. They’re really cheap, thus really expendable, and they only have to work once.

These semi-submersibles aren’t making round trips between the coastlines of Columbia, Peru, and Ecuador and the US. Instead, they’re working as “shuttles” between the Cocaine Coast and offshore vessels.

Any ship – merchant, fishing, private, you name it – which visits those nations is going to have people crawling all over it when it docks back in the US. Ships which are “merely” passing off the coasts of those nations face little if any scrutiny. The usual procedure has these semi-subs are built and loaded in small inlets. They’re then towed offshore when they cast off to travel under their own power to a mid-ocean rendezvous to pass along the drugs.

The ship which towed them out never visits the US, the ship they rendezvous with never visits the Cocaine Coast, and the two ships involved never get within hundreds of miles of each other.

It’s a shell game played with millions of dollars of cocaine and the semi-subs are one of the cups hiding the pea.

Mickey Mouse or not, it’s working and working rather well.

I point out again that these semi-submersibles are “throw-aways”. They’re meant to work once and they work often enough.

After looking into it in a little more depth, apparently at least some of them actually are going about it intelligently and professionally. The guys caught in this article are total amateur hour, but then that’s how they were caught. The ones who know what they’re doing don’t get caught.

That being said, the amateurs are a hell of a lot more amusing. In the past hour I’ve seen giant weed catapults, cocaine pumpkin cannons, giant remote controlled octocopters, jumps that Evel Knievel would be proud of, a big ass crane, weather balloons, fake carrots, and on and on.

Which is only to be expected when there’s so much money to be made in it. You could easily redo all the old roadrunner cartoons with drugrunner cartoons and still not approach the insanity level of real life drug smuggling.

We use to have guys back in the day that would use the canals at night to move drugs and other illegal things . Still goes on .

Seen a rubber ducky pull up on my beach one night with a mate . Like 2 in the morning . The boat took of and two dudes dressed in black run up the beach . Could just make out in the distance big bags on there backs . The black rubber ducky dissapeared into the darkness heading back out to sea to the traffic lane . That was around 20 years ago .

The most sophisticated method I saw while looking around is a simple submerged dropbox. One boat heads out “fishing” with a waterproof container suspended under it. When it gets to the drop zone, or if it detects official attention, it drops the line and lets the drop box sink to the bottom. A week to a month to even a year later, or after receiving an encrypted signal, the box surfaces and transmits its encrypted GPS coordinates for collection by a receiving vessel. All automatic. No human pilot needed.
