This guy was a senior engineer. That’s talent that will be sorely missed. When someone compares loosing a person on the team to pulling your arm out of a bucket of water and there’s no hole, you might want to point out to whomever is listening that the level of the water in the bucket goes down when the arm is removed. None of this should be a surprise, but it is rather sad. I didn’t read his whole memo, but he certainly still rather thoughtful and concerned about the well being of his fellow employees and the company as a whole.

I would consider boycott, but it would be rather difficult to pull off, and it’s not as if there are better tech companies out there to invest in.

Because the search engine is so ubiquitous and because the company spends so much time and effort on self-promotion, people forget that Google has only one successful product.

It’s called AdWords.

AdWords is minuscule. It requires a tiny maintenance and development staff. It produces over 90% of Google’s revenue. It also depends on the untested belief that online advertising is cost effective in given certain parameters.

Everything else Google does, all the splashy R&D projects, all the acquisitions, all of it, depends on AdWords to pay the bills. None of all the other things Google says and does actually pays for itself. It’s AdWords or nothing.

When the online advertising market changes – and it’s more and more resembling a bubble – Google’s market cap will implode.

When AdWord can no longer pay the bills, Google will no longer be able to operate as it does.

Do not date. Do not impregnate. Do not co-habitate. Above all, do not marry. Reclaim and never again surrender your personal sovereignty.
