    Hi guys,

Just checking in because I wanted to share with you some newly discovered resources that are helping me immensely, maybe they can be useful for some.

Due to very stressful periods in my life, I developed a nasty smoking habit. These last years the situation has improved and said to myself there’s now time to get rid of the habit. Easier said than done. Tried countless times multiple methods (Cold Turkey, Chantix, patch, lozenges, e-cigs) but the moment the levels of stress increases here I’m back to zero again.

That was until I serendipitously discovered a book by Kelly McGonnigal, called “The Willpower Instinct” That was a game changer. Among the tips there was meditation, and being myself very Western minded and against all things mystic I didn’t have much of an interest in it. But I decided to give it a try.

What would be my surprise when I discovered that after some meditation sessions, my Will somewhat got strenghtened, I was able to cope better with stress, smoking cravings are highly reduced and my resting heart rate is decreasing as signal of higher fitness. I only smoke occasionally now, as a treat, and without the former compulsion.

However the increase in willpower have also permeated other spheres of my life: I work a new day job and have started a tech company with a co-founder, and are starting to have some success. I feel myself far more focused and efficient in my thinking, and helped to start some other healthy habits as well.

So, for those who struggle with some kind of addiction, obsession or compulsion, this is my recommended regime:

-“Scottish” Showers: In the morning, take a hot shower, then at the end finish with cold water all the way. Sucks the first days, but the benefits and increased willpower are so great you won’t stop doing it after some days.

-Meditate with a Yoga Nidra Script, first time in the morning and before sleep. I recommend this one:

(Note1: The most useful parts of this meditation are the preliminary breathing exercises and the Body Scan, you can ignore other parts if you want)

(Note2: There is a part on this meditation where the guide start to say: “In my powerlessness…” cut the video on that part because that part was a big mistake on the part of the video makers)

-Take a good multivitamin. Those are, in my opinion, the best in the world, and they are inexpensive (be sure to buy the effervescent ones, they have the best bioavailability)

I wanted to upload images of the evolution of my Resting Heart Rate but it seems this feature is not yet available. I started on 63bpm on May and now I’m on 48bpm. I almost couldn’t believe it until I saw the data.

You should look at this survey it’s a large data sample. Meditation is surely beneficial.

B.2. Status of Smoking and Drinking 18 cases had a habit of smoking before practice and all of them quit smoking after practice. It only took an average of 4.58 days for them to quit smoking. 103 cases had a habit of drinking before practice, 100 cases quit drinking after practice, 2 cases drink less than 3 cups a week, and 1 case did not fill out the answer.
