Well last weeks experiment with 19th century music went ah so/so, I know Widor can be long winded. So tonight we go back to basics: i.e. 16th/17th century and I will be featuring Johann Pachelbel (September 1653-1706) While Bach, Buxtuhude, and Bruhns are the archetypes of the North German organ school, Pachelbel is the linchpin of the southern German organ school following the tradition of Froberger, Krell and Fischer.

I know what your thinking: is PP going to torture us with that Canon in D? NO absolutely not. All one ever hears when Pachelbel’s name is dropped is: CANON IN D! CANON IN D! blah blah blah. I say phooey on the canon in D. Do you know what that was composed for? Background dinner music, like the white noise Telemann used to crank out endlessly. OK fine rich patrons pay big bucks for this kind of background music BUT its not exactly “great”. No Pachelbel was known as an organist and by God that is what we are going to hear. I’m sure most all of you have never heard ANYTHING by Pachelbel but that boring Canon; so buckle up and crank up the volume. (Since last weeks 40 minute selection didn’t fly to well we’ll start with something short. I will be spending the next couple of weeks featuring Pachelbel so there is no rush. Enjoy! And the kid playing this is REALLY talented.)
