Last week we delved pretty deep into the Gothic, but this week is something completely different. César-Auguste-Jean-Guillaume-Hubert Franck (1822 – 1890) was a composer, pianist, organist, and music teacher who worked in Paris during his adult life. So yes he is a little out of my customary restriction of avoiding music post 1760. But what the heck.

Frank was born at Liège, in what is now Belgium (though at the time of his birth it was part of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands). He gave his first concerts there in 1834 and studied privately in Paris. After a brief return to Belgium, he moved to Paris, where he married and embarked on a career as teacher and organist. He gained a reputation as a formidable improviser, and traveled widely in France to demonstrate new instruments built by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll.

In 1858 he became organist at Sainte-Clotilde, a position he retained for the rest of his life. He became professor at the Paris Conservatoire in 1872; he took French nationality, a requirement of the appointment.

This is his organ finale in B flat– this is good work out music!

Aw man. Your music hit the wall in 1795. /just kidding/

Funny story about the Friday Night Organ Offering. When I first joined and noticed this topic I thought it was going to be about offering dick to women on Friday night. Glad to find out it is actually about Organ music and history. Good job as always Pistol Pete!

OK I didn’t realize that was such a lack-luster performance of that work. It should be a rafter-rattler so if someone can find a better example please post it. Meanwhile I offer my humble apologies and offer instead this little ditty. (Nathan Kicks ass with this!)

Thanks for the clips, Pete. Simply awesome music.

There’s a church near me with one of those organs so big they built the building around it. It’s absolutely magnificent and can rattle your bones. Apart from the usual Sunday services, they have occasional performances that I love to attend.

Do not date. Do not impregnate. Do not co-habitate. Above all, do not marry. Reclaim and never again surrender your personal sovereignty.
