A great many of our brethren lack the benefit of living in Florida; instead they are living in “Ice Station ZERO” and their b~~~~ are turning blue. So in honor of you I offer the relevant concerto from Vivaldi’s four seasons–i.e. Winter. This work is usually scored for a small string orchestra but custom and convention notwithstanding I managed to find a version scored for—-wait for it—-pipe organ. It wasn’t easy but I did it. Jonathan Scott plays at the Organ of Basílica de Santa María Spain. Its pretty good and has the text lines so you can follow the thoughts of the old red monk himself. (And NO the organ is not an old classical Spanish style instrument so no blaring reed choruses in the pipes).

I’m in Florida, however I grew up in New Jersey and spent 7 years right outside of Chicago. I HATE WINTER. I HATE COLD.

This is a great interpretation, PistolPete.

Although unfortunately I couldn’t come up with any organ interpretation for my old time favorite classical piece, it is still quite fitting to winter, too, albeit only with one piano and vocals (translation of those to be found underneath the video). It basically is a sad story of a man, who has been left by his wife and in a cold winter night he happens to discover a former doubleganger (hence the title) appearance of himself as he used to be this hopeless kind of mangina in torture just after she left him in pain.

The music of which, as simple as it may appear with its first notes is very strong and can send some real (winter) chills down one’s spine. You’ve been warned. But it’s also very moving in a melancholy way, so enjoy it if you can…

Oh erm, another thing I almost forgot to mention about the one than I posted:

You know those first four notes of this Schubert piece in English (in the original tuning; this one was slightly pitched) they would read “b-flat”, “a”, “c”, “b” but in German they actually read “b“, “a“, “c“, “h” as in the spelling of J. S. Bach, who must have quite evidently been a great inspiring mentor to Schubert.

Anyway and fittingly enough it derives from Schubert’s song cycle called “winter journey”…

I wish I had some musical talent. I love pipe organs!
