Tomorrow the French are going to decide whether to preserve their national culture and save themselves OR let themselves go down the drain. I’m hoping they decide to save their country and in that spirit we have tonight’s offering.

Claude Balbastre (1724-1799) He settled in Paris in 1750 and became organist of the Saint Roch church. Balbastre was quickly introduced to the Parisian musical circles and high society, and made a brilliant career: he became organist of the Notre-Dame cathedral and of the Chapelle Royale, where he became harpsichordist to the French royal court and he taught queen Marie-Antoinette, and became organist for Louis-Stanislas-Xavier, Count of Provence, who later became Louis XVIII, King of France. Balbastre’s fame was so great that the Archbishop of Paris, Christophe de Beaumont had to forbid him to play at Saint Roch during some of the services, because the churches were always crowded when Balbastre played.

During the French Revolution, Balbastre’s connection with nobility and the royal court might have endangered his life, but he adapted to the new political situation, playing the Revolutionary hymns and songs on his organ. The popular myth is that a Paris mob had threatened to destroy the organ of Natre-Dame and the only thing that dissuaded them was Balbastre’s “hasty” rendition of the work below:

And from our old friend Francois Couperin (1668-1733) the Organ Mass No. 2

Pray for France and the French people!

    PistolPete,

Nice videos brother. That organ sounds so beautiful. I shall share a video, by Spetsnaz, about Yukio Mishima, who tried so hard to save Japanese culture, since this thread is to do with preserving culture.

I love this stuff man! Thanks for posting them when you do.

My grandfather played the organ, even played it for his church. I wish I had appreciated it more at the time.

    Wow!

Thanks for sharing. I originally thought “how random to post this in a thread about organ music!” and almost skipped watching it.
I am GLAD that I did not skip it.

I am only 5 minutes in, but this is amazing.

Going to have to research him and his writings/teachings more!

I’ve never understood why such great men of the Japanese Culture would take their owns lives when so much more could be learned from them. Perhaps maybe he thought Japan was to far gone for him to have a worthy long life? It’s inspirational and tragic at the same time.

The organ music is incredible, I could listen all day! It seems to be becoming a lost art! To much electric crap in music today, it has no soul no life really. Just my op.
