To re-cap the quiz question was the name of the composer who had Bruhns, Bach and Handel as students? And I believe Zarathrustra got it right: Dietrich Buxtehude (1637- 1707). So why all this focus on a dead white guy who plays organ? Easy there is a MGTOW connection to this story HA suprise Buxtehude’s principal position from 1668 until his death was at the Marienkirche, Lübeck which had two organs, a large one for big services and a small one for devotionals and funerals. He succeeded the prior organist, Franz Tunder. He married Tunder’s daughter Anna Margarethe in 1668 – it was a common practice that a man marry the daughter of his predecessor in his occupation. NOTE the same year he married her he ascended to the post. Buxtehude and Anna Margarethe had seven daughters.
Now the position of Organist/choir master at the Marinekirche was VERY prestigious and paid uber $$$. Buxtehude was an old man by the time Bruhns/Bach/Handel showed up AND he still had ONE unmarried daughter. YET he was not succeeded by any of the three…why? they all passed on marrying his daughter. Apparently the $$$ and social status was insufficient to overcome whatever deficiencies Buxtehde’s daughter brought to the table. One can only imagine. YIKES!
Anyway I’ve selected a couple of very “energetic” works to entertain and amaze:
The only big Organ I have seen was at an Organ stop pizza. The The Mighty Wurlitzer they call it. It’s still making them money and being played every weekend. It’s a pizza joint (a few miles from me). If it takes pizza sales to keep it running, I hope they keep doing it. Be a shame to lose it. Place is always packed in the Winter.
If you rescue a damsel in distress, all you will get is a distressed damsel.
YET he was not succeeded by any of the three…why? they all passed on marrying his daughter. Apparently the $$$ and social status was insufficient to overcome whatever deficiencies Buxtehde’s daughter brought to the table
Wow. MGTOW in the 1600’s. She must have been a piece of work. Tradition was everything back then, so for that to be broken she must have been a serious bitch.
