The past couple of weeks I’ve noticed that MG TOWER and Blade have refrained from jumping into this thread. I can only assume this is because the music I’ve been posting is “boring”. Now last week Istallbs jumped in with a version of the famous D minor Toccata Fugue—I guess in an effort to elevate the discourse. The version he posted from Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall is perhaps the BEST I’ve ever heard—and over the years I’ve heard this piece a LOT.

So tonight we’re going with several old favorites of mine that are frankly a little dark and more than a little dramatic. The Organist is the GREAT Ton Koopman again. (Yes Easter Weekend he was the conductor of the St. Matthew Passion we heard.) Where he is playing I have no idea—but my guess would be somewhere in the Netherlands. Enjoy guys!

0:00 – Prelude & fugue BWV 533 (Known as The “Cathedral” Prelude & Fugue”)
4:39 – Prelude BWV 569 (This is normally not played as subdued as Ton does it is here why? I don’t know but for comparison purposes listen to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wd-8Dfxa7uA. It is WAY different.
10:45 – Fantasia& fugue BWV 537 ONE of my all time favorites; a little dark and moody but brilliant.
18:40 – Prelude & fugue BWV 545 OK I lied this isn’t dark and moody—this one is jubilant and joyous!

If Istallbs want to re-post the Manchester Bridgewater hall thing again please be my guest…I can’t get enough of that. (As I told him last week even though the location is England the organ was built by Marcusson & Son out of Holland and they make the VERY BEST. You’d have thought Manchester would have gone with Harris & Harris or Mander or some other English based company But they blew the bucks on a Dutch instrument and it was money well spent.

The music reminds me of the original Solaris movie, and also The Mirror, both by Tarkovsky.

Especially this music below from Solaris. Damn great films glad to have on DVD.
