Claudio Monteverdi, 1567-1643. A composer of both secular and sacred music, and a pioneer in the development of opera, he is considered a crucial transitional figure between the Renaissance and the Baroque periods of music history. Born in Cremona, where he undertook his first musical studies and compositions, Monteverdi developed his career first at the court of Mantua (c. 1590–1613) and then until his death in the Republic of Venice where he was maestro di capella at the basilica of San Marco.

Much of Monteverdi’s output, including many stage works, has been lost. His surviving music includes nine books of madrigals, large-scale sacred works such as his Vespro della Beata Vergine (Vespers) of 1610, and three complete operas. His opera L’Orfeo (1607) is the earliest of the genre still widely performed; towards the end of his life he wrote works for the commercial theatre in Venice, including Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria and L’incoronazione di Poppea. (Which I’ve heard and even though I don’t like opera its still pretty good.)

Sorry on another post your were talking about listening to music at Westminster on X-mas day. Just wondering are you able to listen to the live broadcast on the radio or something? Is there a website or how are you listening to this. Just wondering I think that would be great on X-Mas.

I was caught, in the middle of a railroad track!

    (THUNDER)

I looked around and I knew there was no turning back!

    (THUNDER)

My mind raced, and I thought what could I do?!

    (THUNDER)

And I knew, there was no help, no help from you!

    (THUNDER)

Sound of the drums, beating in my heart

The thunder of guns tore me apart

    You’ve been,,, Thunderstruck!!!

    Rode down the highway

Broke the limit, we hit the ton

Went through to Texas, yea Texas and we had some fun

We met some girls, some dancers that gave a good time

Broke all the rules, played all the fools

Yea, yea, they, they, they blew our minds

And I was shaking at the knees

    Could I come again please.

Yea the ladies were too kind

    You’ve been, thunderstruck, thunderstruck

    yea yea yea thunderstruck, thunderstruck

    Yea

    Oh, thunderstruck, yea

Now we’re shaking at the knees

    Could I come again please.

    Thunderstruck…………
