After Bach’s death in 1750 his music virtually disappeared. He and his music were considered old fashioned, rigid and behind the times even before his death. His own sons, great composers in their own right abandoned the long standing baroque tradition in favor of the “new” Rocco” style of Mozart.

Bach was rescued from oblivion by Felix Mendelssohn. In the 1840s it was Mendelssohn who lead the Bach revival. His interest was piqued when in 1827 his material grandmother presented him with a copy of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion. Since that time many composers have paid homage to Bach through their own interpretation of his works. And many of them have tackled the finale of the St. Matthew Passion. The finale is the final chorus “Wir setzen uns mit Tränen nieder” (We sit down in tears), which depicts a mankind in tears in front of the Crucifix.

Charles Marie Widor (1844-1937) was a great admirer of the Bach’s music. In 1925 he also took a whack at the “Mattheus-Final”. So here it is:

(And for those really interested at 6:19 you will see the organist pull two additional stops. These are the Pedal Contre-Bombarde 32′ and Contre-basse 32′. just thought I would mention it.

For those curious here is the stop list:

Thanks Pete. I’m a great lover of Bach’s music and had no idea about this.

In my book Bach is nothing less than an underrated genius.

    always has been

    &

    always will be

I'd rather die a natual death with a clear MGTOW conscience somewhere off the grid than one within "modern" civilisation with a big stress mark on my forehead and a couple of dozen tubes plugged into my body. Back to the plantation..? Me..? Hey, literally: I won't ever fucking kid myself...YZERLMNTSIC

Great pick Pete, it’s Beautiful. If I’m not mistaken this piece was used near the end of Casino.

Found it. I love hearing alternate renditions.
