The St Matthew Passion, BWV 244, is a sacred oratorio written by Johann Sebastian Bach in 1727 for solo voices, double choir and double orchestra, It sets chapters 26 and 27 of the Gospel of Matthew (in the Luther Bible) to music, with interspersed chorales and arias. It is widely regarded as one of the masterpieces of classical sacred music. Warning it is quite long—almost 3 hours but it is good stuff and this version produced by Ton Koopman has the English subtitles.

I hope you don’t mind me including one entry that isn’t Bach. It’s actually “more Cello than organ” .. however, I really need to post this to get it out of my system .. there just is no other thread that will accept this composition. So, thanks .. in advance.
The first time I heard this classical piece live was at an outdoor summer concert in the park .. I was sitting close up next to the Cello section and when it began .. it basically blew my mind. The sound of the bows and strings working so hard behind the music .. string on string, sometimes, creaking wood .. as the musicians lean forward in their chairs and get a real workout .. awesome to say the least. I can honestly say this is probably among my favorite musical numbers of all time.
The funny thing about this is that once it begins .. almost everyone recognizes it in an instant .. and can probably guess the composer. Yet. and here’s the real zinger .. I had no idea exactly what it was called. A rather difficult name .. with a very familiar melody. Thanks 🙂

Thank you PP – I’ve missed this. Bach is one of my favourites especially on the harpsichord.
