Pete, it’s better late than never!
I remember I saw this movie when I was a kid. If an American says the movie kicks ass then I need to rewatch it again! 🙂
Here is another one war movie called “Burnt by the Sun 2”. I think there is also an English version, but these fragments transcend language. Watched the movie a week ago. Five hours in one breath. Unfortunately, the end is sugar-coated for a bit.

To be honest, it’s very tough theme for those people whom I know, PistolPete…

From my point, under official version of that war was covered and perpetuated state of havoc, grief, despair, horror of genocide. And there are very few to no one in Russia, who somehow hadn’t been affected by WWII. It’s MHO.

If you’re interested in another side, which is utterly different from official representation, please take a look at Come and See by Elem Klimov or Nikolai Nikulin’s War memoirs (Николай Никулин Воспоминания о войне) – latter one is so far the last one what I’ve read on that subject.
