Hey, I was battling with depression a few years ago. Anti-depressants were not doing anything about it. My Dr took a different angle and started asking me about my sexual health. Namely, how often do I wake up with an erection. Truth be told, I had noticed that hadn’t been occurring for a while. He had my Testosterone level checked, and it was below normal. I started Testosterone replacement therapy and the depression cleared up. Testosterone is critical to healthy male brain function.
Just another angle to consider. I hope you can find a solution soon.
Hey man.
I rarely post here, but feel an obligation to send you some well wishes.
I am 36 and have been feeling the exact same way you do for about one year now. Your post rings so familiar to me (and I am sure others on the forum), that it is somewhat eerie. A good friend of mine serendipitously opened up to me regarding this issue as well.
I have found exercise to be extremely helpful. I used to run quite often, but then stopped after (you guessed it) a breakup. Motivation went down. No more exercise, no more good feelings. Begin a negative feedback loop that lasted about 3 years now. You know compound interest as relating to saving money? Well, I believe we are suffering from compound DISINTEREST. Think about it. No fault of yours. No fault of mine.
The difficult part is dragging your ass up again. The motivation is harder to muster at age 30+ than at 19-26 or so. Very much a feeling of “Again?!” “How many times do I have to keep on getting up after getting chopped off at the knees”? “Where is my prize”? “What is this s~~~ty game all about?”
The problem is not with you. The problem is with society. I do not advocate the use of psychiatric drugs. What is that quote… “It is of no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society”?
Get some exercise and hold on to that mantra. Those are two good tools. Exercise can be quite boring indeed, however it is one of the few things in the world where you genuinely get out of it what you put into it. It is a great confidence booster. Not because of your physique, but because of your sense of accomplishment and goal setting.
Good luck to us both. You are not alone in how you feel. You are more than likely a sensitive and intelligent dude. Tough to be either of those things these days, let alone both.
Hence, these forums as a solid base to keep you up.
Also, have you been doing things to yourself that you know are bad for you? I myself have been drinking like a fish. Going to bars by myself for well over 3 years. I know that is not the “real” me. The cognitive dissonance/dual lifestyle is TERRIBLE for our state of mind. I am pretty sure this is what most Buddhist/Meditative teachings are based around.
Do you find yourself participating in any similar foolish behaviors? Inactivity, over-eating, over-drinking to cure the loneliness? Do your best to recognize them and cut them away. They are ugly s~~~ty lampreys, like those things that latch on to cool looking sharks and ruin the picture.
I am on the same journey as you. Just starting out again. I do not have all of the answers, but best of luck to us both!

Anonymous14I have never had bad depression, but whenever in a rut exercise does the trick. FORCE yourself to get on a program, s~~~, join a gym and get to it 4 days a week or so, I guarantee you will feel better.
