I’ve been playing the latest Hitman game and I’m really not sure how much of a fan of episodic installments I am. It feels like a way for videogame producers to charge more money. I miss the days of just getting a game in its entirety to get lost in and I feel like more games are going down this route.

So in order to provide value for money they have made the stages really open ended in terms of how you can fulfill your assassination contracts and there is an online aspect in terms of taking on other people’s quest challenges and ranking yourself against other players. I found a bug though in one of the sections that won’t allow me to dress up as a fashion model in order to get access to one of the assassination contracts. It’s a pretty entertaining section too – quite frustrating. The dialogue and NPC reactions in this area were also entertaining.

I think I would enjoy Hitman as more of an open world game where you could pick and choose your contracts and fly to different destinations – kind of having an airport as a central hub area and maybe even some contracts within the airport ie. stop a terrorist bomb threat, mimic a security guard to reach a high level VIP official etc.

Anyone else play these games? I think the best one in the series was Hitman:Blood Money personally – the stages were really entertaining at points and quite memorable. Also – what are your opinions on episodic games – I feel they make more sense in, for example, the telltale game series of the Walking Dead or the Wolf Among Us. But even there I would still prefer to play these games in their entirety, in a similar way to indulging in a TV boxset series.

I, personally, prefer Hitman as an open-world full game than an episodic one. I think this is done because more people are just doing it. It can sometimes just take away from the experience. For some reason, I became disinterested in this new title.

I kept buying Telltale games until after they made The Walking Dead Season 2. The style just became more repetitive, and I felt like the same outcome with slightly different changes would come from these games. I also didn’t have as much time on my hands as I had before. Life is Strange ultimately ended up with two choices for the fate of your characters. These games can’t go into the depth and choices that developers like CD Projekt RED and BioWare have established.

If it grabs my attention, though, I might get my hands on it.

Games budgets have now reached blockbuster movies levels, and since hollywood has been engaging in “episodic” movies for a while in order to keep their most profitable franchises , wel…. profitable, it’s only reasonable AAA games would follow the same path. Sadly, this is actually an efficient business model ( at least for the given time ), so it’s unlikely it will die anytime soon.

"We didn't start the fire. It was always burning. Since the world's been turning" "A world that vilifies men only breeds a generation of men that feel no empathy towards women" “In a woman’s mind , there is really no such thing as a ‘we’. In her eyes, earth allways revolves around her, not the other way around. So thinking that your needs , aspirations or desires are valid enough to be persued, or even that you are entitled achive such goals, is like asking your boss for a pay rise in your very first day at the job.”

I really enjoyed the Telltale games series one of the Walking Dead. I got about three episodes through life is strange then lost interest.

Yes probably this model is here to stay (Final Fantasy 7 remake also episodic) but I miss the good old days!

Excuses, excuses 😉 it is a really enjoyable game series though. It should be prescribed for all cases of red pill rage!

Hitman Blood Money was my favorite as well. It’s unfortunate that they didn’t expand on it, because it gets repetitive once you’ve done everything.

If only Eidos released that level editor tool.

Episodic gaming has some interesting concepts like the walking dead games. The potential to for choice affecting game play is interesting, although the illusion of choice is what you get. I think it is just a way to nickle and dime us to get more out of us. But anymore, I wait for it to go down in price and for them to fix all the bugs which will obviously be there.

It’s a shame. You can’t get a complete game anymore until the game has been out for a few months. And I hate playing unfinished games, so I might as well wait, and the price will drop as well.
