Is this a possible or realistic desire?
I’ve been through job interview after job interview, and, for the most part, the pattern has been the same: do everything we ask of you, jump, ask us how high, and if you’re a good little doggy, maybe we’ll consider you for this role. Work on this hour-long project for our benefit, and we’ll consider it. Even in jobs I have had, they have zero respect for you, your time, and your work.
The “tech interviews” are downright offensive. If you told a carpenter: “I’m thinking of hiring you as my carpenter. On your own time, with your own resources, build a chair to my specifications, deliver it to me by this time, and if I like it I’ll consider the possibility of hiring you as my carpenter,” he’d tell you to go f~~~ yourself. I’m an engineer, I’m a professional; why should I behave any differently?
Is this just a fact of life? Are we all doomed to this existence if we want to be employees?

I’m afraid so. And then the s~~~e you have to put up with once you get the job.

Employers don’t “care’ about YOU or I or ANYBODY else.
WE are EXPENSIVE utility items.

So what’s the use? A buddy of mine said alimony is just there to make a man generate more disposable income. Because now with that future judgement hanging over his head he has to work like an ass and earn double just to keep a decent standing after everything is said and done. The fat cats know that they have 50% of his pay cheque headed to them as revenue via the careless spending bitch.
Know when it is your duty to give them zero explanations for your actions.

I heard of some employers doing this to get free labor out of people for projects they were working on, never hired anyone.
Knowledge is power..... Don't waste your brain on bullshit

Yes! I’ve always suspected that. Not surprised in the slightest.
They would have me believe I’m the arrogant and unreasonable one because I won’t work without being paid.

Companies are just like high school.
Gaaaaah . . . you’re right. That’s horrifying.
"You can either love women, or understand women. You can't do both. Because once you understand women, you realize that there is really nothing to love."
I wouldn’t know. I’ve never worked for anyone else. But let me tell you this, being self employed is no picnic either. You pay more taxes, banks will never give you a loan (including a mortgage), you work long hours (15-18 hour days are common), you’re ALWAYS on call and NEVER get a real day off, and you succeed or fail based 100% on your own merits.
With a regular job, sure the company you’re working for can always fire you or they can go under, but if you do a s~~~ job it doesn’t usually directly affect you. Just keep your head down, give as little as possible, and once you’ve put your hours in for the day, you’re DONE and can do whatever the f~~~ you want to do. Frankly it sounds like paradise to me.
I recall a phrase that describes many jobs: They work you like a field hand, pay you like a busboy, and release you like an old, slow halfback.
