    Hello,

    Ill try to be brief.

In college I had a choice between STEM and ECON. I chose a BS in STEM. Now that I am red pill I have a lot of free time and I have been studying ECON. I actually enjoy it, it is fun. I watch lectures on Coursea and YouTube, I read pop ECON books, behavioral ECON, Freakononics, etc. I’m not trying to understand the stock market. I don’t want to be a business man. I enjoy the data and the theory. I am trying to understand human behavior based upon the law of supply and demand. Many years ago I completed 4 semesters of Calculus math so I ain’t dumb.

I’m 40 ish and have 20 years experience in STEM and I like to think I’m smart and hard working.

So I have some questions for you guys?

If I go to school (online/ full time/ part time) and get a ECON degree , are there any decent / interesting jobs at the AS/BS level, or is it all drone/ scut work?

Do I need a degree, If I have a mastery of the the material and a STEM BS, is that acceptable.

Is there a ROI on doing this/ changing career fields?

What is the job market current / future for a new BS ECON/ experienced STEM worker?

What can I realistically expect for a starting salary?

Is this a dumb idea / should stay in STEM and have ECON be my fun hobby

    Please be Brutally honest.

I have an economics/finance degree. I used it to go into accounting. For that to be lucrative, I had to earn an accounting designation afterwards (CPA). I never tried to get into a think tank or public policy type job. Accounting was always my goal. I can’t think of many options with just an economics degree.

I bathe in the tears of single moms.

My sense is STEM is the better field to be looking for work in. I believe you are better off. OTH my tax CPA drives a new luxury car.

I enjoyed reading Freakonomics and its sequel. I can recommend Date-onomics as well. Both books tell us lots of human behavior boils down to economic choices, even if the chooser doesn’t know what they are doing.

I got MA in Economics. Worked accounting/finance for Fortune 200 company for 5 years. Couldn’t handle the complexities of boring unrewarding BS and estrogen-permeated office politics and got fired.
When I studied in Lithuania – the education I got was equivalent of an MBA degree in the states. When I came to the US – I was surprised to learn that Economics was treated as a liberal arts degree.
I tried going the CFA route, but it didn’t work. Because in order to get a CFA designation you must be employed in the Investments field, and I couldn’t get in in 2008. All the hiring was done straight from US-based MBA schools, so unless you had experience – nobody would hire you.
I thought going into Economics was beneficial in the long run, but I was wrong – should had stuck with my other major – Informatics. Going to a business school instead of developing as a coder was the biggest mistake of my life.
I still see this as a valuable education thought, because I always wanted to learn how the money works. And I did.

I can’t recommend what you should do, but I can tell you my story and you can see if you have any parallel interests. I have a master in Microbiology and have published papers in my field. There are few pathways to success IN TECHNICAL FIELDS. Some pathways require a minimum PhD, but the problem with that is if you want to be an academic you can spend years as a lowly paid Post Doc and you may never get a tenured position. The other pathway is through business. Think about this. Why should anyone pay you a top salary just because you have an advanced degree? The only reason is to pad resumes for a government contract. I see lots of “pretend work” and make work “jobs’ in that future. I worked in both private and government and found that in organizations, you can get economic stability, but only if you are luck. But what if the organization gets reorganized or goes belly up. It happens more frequently then you would guess.. I took a different path. In order to earn advanced degrees in a stem major you must have intelligence. I realized that organizations will pick your brains for your ideas or innovations but after that, they DO NOT CARE. Even if you consistently come up with new procedures, patents, innovations or increase productivity. NO ONE CARES. It is ALL about who you know, or who knows you. Lets say you are good friends with three layers of management above you. All it takes is one little personnel clerk (usually a woman) .to reorganize everything so your contacts are now meaningless. It only takes an illness, death or promotion of your key allies and you must start building loyal work relationships all over again. I decided that if you make someone money and you can do it quickly they will pay you without regard to personalities. So I became a Do It Yourself and .self educated person. With few exceptions most all learning is self learning. Skills and procedures can be learned in more ways than just working in an organization. Bottom line I learned several trades with zero job titles. I found there is PLENTY of work. The real issue is not “there is no work” but how much are they willing to pay you for the work. I taught myself several trades and bid LOW on a project. I try to “buy” future work when they see how good my final work is. I have lost money on some jobs, but most of the time people are so tired of reading “scrapbooks” of what you did or can do they DO NOT CARE. they only want the work that YOU do to be the best. I never advertise. All of my work is via referrals from people who liked my work. Some of my work has allowed me to charge as much as $150/hour. I prefer to work for people who demand quality work that waste time playing office politics and HR games and most of these organization types wouldn’t know excellent work if they saw it. I am my own boss and never lie to myself. I get zero vacation or sick leave but do not care. The money that comes in changes your whole concept of fringe “benefits”. What about retirement? I put almost 199% of my net income into so-called tax free or low tax rertirement programs that I fund for myself. The first time you are “out of work” is the worst If you already have a paying job, keep your mouth shut to coworkers—they will stab you in the back because they are jealous of YOUR FREEDOM. I never look down on any job that pays money. Sweep the floor ? yes sir! And I will work more of these jobs until I am able to choose. Also never let them know what you can really do, if you are working fast food no one wants to know you used to handle a 30 millijn dollar a year budget. But build internal strength and ber extremeley frugal with your income. I started again in life with ZERO ( nasty divorce) , lived in a car and was mostly “jobless” (organization jobs) so no one could touch my almost zero income. You can have lots of wealth in just a few pounds of gold and also silver bullion coins. Good luck and make your own way . Never depend on anyone for your success Can you imagine a published microbiologist hand digging utility trenches? Why not, it pays CASH and is HONEST WORK.

    Yes I can.
My motto and practice were, weather I worked elbow deep in s~~~ or in an air conditioned office made no difference
as long as I was paid right.

Sorry I could not contribute to your question J S , unlike you guys I dropped out of university after two years
so I could not add anything of value. My education was mostly, university of life.

    @DRS,

Bulls~~~, your opinion is just as valid as anyone else’s here. You have more than 900 Stars so the community thinks you have good things to say.

With respect, you are thinking Blue Pill. So you don’t have letters after your name, who gives a F~~~? I do. You are more valuable than a chick with a M.A. in women studies. Do it, take it, win.
