Hi guys. I’m going to talk about something that may be a non-issue … but I still can’t stop thinking about it. Are we (society as a whole) using the words “savage” and “barbarian” incorrectly?
I’m mainly saying this because the words “savage” and “barbarian” are frequently used to describe ISIS. What is a barbarian? The Ancient Greeks used the word “barbarian” to describe anyone who could not speak Greek. Of course, we use the term to imply that someone is primitive.
Is ISIS primitive? Well, they are an authoritarian organization. Meanwhile, many early human societies were democracies or even functional anarchies. Early America actually had democracy in some places before whites showed up.

I’m essentially saying that comparing ISIS members to prehistoric humans is an unfair insult to prehistoric humans, given that prehistoric humans enjoyed far more freedom than the people living in ISIS territory.
I would go live as a Paleolithic hunter if I could, but I would likely get arrested for that. Perhaps a nuclear war will wipe the slate clean soon.

Anonymous42We don’t need those words anymore, the feminists have a monopoly on them! They own some other mean and nasty words too!
Interesting topic, and your angling gives reason for some contemplation. Such words are unfortunately thrown around in the same manner as racism, patriarchy and rape. This without knowing the meaning of the word they are using. It is typical female reasoning, instead of reading up the actual meaning of a word they just make up a meaning by themselves.
“This is what I think the word means”
“It is not what the dictionary says, you know, the one our language is based upon”
“Yes, but I feel it should mean this instead.
“That kind of thinking serves no one”
“And I feel that makes you into a misogynist!”
As you have so rightly stated @ Uintatherium, the words “savage” and “barbarian” is good examples of this kind of reasoning. These words that originally was a term for uncivilized people which still lived primarily by hunting and gathering. But no, there are too many who feel it should be applied to other things as well.
I throw my lot in with @ Mgtower, what can you do when words do not bear one true meaning anymore? Well you sit back, and let these word-misuser’s collapse their very language into meaningless guttural sounds.
The worst form of inequality is to try to make unequal things equal - Aristotle (384 - 322 BC)
Political correctness threw the dictionary into the blender. ..wiiiiiiirrrrrrr
Some people have also told me that the Iroquois had female leaders.
I’m not sure if that’s true … but I guess that doesn’t matter. They probably didn’t have a word for “microaggression”. Such a society would have collapsed without masculine hunters.

Anonymous3The Romans where specialists in demonizing their opponents.
Barbarians for then was everyone not Roman. We still use the word vandal and vandalism, that was actually a name of a barbarian tribe. This is a very important subject for this philosophy forum: the meaning and use of words and concepts.
Our minds are always trying to reduce reality to easily classified ideas, so that they can quickly interpret the world.
But people with the desire to control others can hack this mode of operation and associate some words with otherwise unrelated concepts.
This means that people have to see behind words into the actions and the context, or fall under the spell of the controlling mob.

Good post! The exchange he posted reminds me of the difference between a Rational Man, and the one whom makes decisions on a Whim (emotional and thoughtless act). The whim is chaotic and unreliable, we all have emotions that reason should guide. Albeit that’s not always easy to do, but we should try to.
Now people’s standard is just what feel’s right, even if the word doesn’t match up.
Just, like we used the word’s “Savage” and other such names against the Native’s of the United States. Unfortunate indeed.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Civilization is on the brink of collapse due to the threats of climate change and nuclear war.
Maybe you believe that climate change is natural and maybe you think it is caused by human activity. Either way, it probably isn’t going away any time soon.
I’m not afraid though. The collapse of civilization is probably the only thing that can defeat the Solans prophecy at this point.
The only cure for the Solans prophecy is the Kaczynski prophecy.

I will have to investigate these. Do you have a reliable source to look these up?

You can Google them pretty easily but I will sum them up.
Solans – Wanted to give women the ability to reproduce without men and then kill off men.
Kaczynski – Wanted to destroy technology itself.I’m starting to think that technology is ultimately progressing to a man-free world. This means that the collapse of civilization is the only thing that can save men in the long run.
