I will predict for you something I have seen happen with several different men who are paying child support for children living with their mothers. You know exactly the date that the child support stops. Theoretically, 2 lawyers, a judge and your ex also know that date. Realistically, the lawyers and judge have forgotten all about it, and have moved on to other cases. Your ex has likely also forgotten that this money WILL stop someday.

It’s part of her monthly budget now and if she’s like most women, she thinks and plans not much further than the next month, if that far…

I have known several different men who paid child support for more than 10 years until the kid turned 18. The following month, they stopped sending the checks. A couple weeks later, they got a hostile phone call from the ex demanding that they cough up ‘this month’s check’, and bitching at them about it being late. All those men took no small measure of satisfaction from reminding those women that there was no more money coming and telling her to f’k off. I saw this so many times that I started predicting it for men who were still making payments. The last time I made the prediction, the man I was making it to didn’t believe me. He said, “There’s no way she’s going to be that stupid…”.

He was wrong.

Several weeks after that last payment, he got the text message about the late payment. He showed it to me, along with his response text. We both got a good laugh. He keeps them in his phone as a sort of trophy.

Perhaps this scenario is waiting for you at the end of your payments. You know exactly how many days until you no longer have to make these payments. It’s good to have that date as something to look forward to, but I would not remind her of it as it approaches. Stay quiet, and make the payments as you are.

Then, when you’ve made the last payment, ghost her and let that date hit her like a second wall …
