I noticed something funny. Yesterday I made a topic here about flipping things on Ebay for some spare cash on the side. I mentioned how I was going to buy hunting/survival flashlights in bulk and then sell them. I made that topic on my PC. I type up all the topics I make here on my PC and have never logged into the mobile website, though I do lurk from my cell phone from time to time (but never log-in). Oddly enough, yesterday while browsing some other websites on my phone, I start seeing ads for Flashlights/hunting gear.
A very similar thing happened to me a few days prior to that with something else that I was searching for. I started seeing ads for that as well. I feel that 2 times is too suspicious to be a coincidence and that I am certainly being tracked somehow. What really boggles my mind is that I am never logged into my google account on my PC. I am on my phone though, but one would think it wouldn’t matter, and that what I do on my home computer/phone are 2 separate things since there is no link between them. Wrong apparently.
Can anyone explain why this is happening and what counter-measures to take to mitigate this? Any programs/apps I should download or steps to take?
On a side note, We all love the mobile website, but I’ve been wanting to make a request for quite some time now. I feel very uncomfortable browsing the mobile website while at work because the letters “M G T O W” are at the top. I don’t like prying eyes spying on my browsing habits because it can raise questions and create problems. I often have to cover the top part of my phone with my finger just to be on the safe side. KeyMaster, is there anything that can be done about this? Maybe reduce the size of the font a bit?
Google maybe?

I noticed something similar a while back (“why was my Youtube history from my phone showing up on my PC browser?”) and made a thread about it – it turned out my Android phone was logged into my Gmail without me thinking about it and that was the connection. Possibly you’ve done something similar without even realising.
Wandering MGHOW, These are called Analytics. Specifically Google Analytitcs. They are indeed trackers, but only for the purpose of suggesting products Google thinks you might be interested in, based on your web searches, and webpages you came from. So for example, if you logged in here, posted here about shoes, then logged off of your PC … Went on your phone, without being logged in, but clicked on the page you posted while on your PC about shoes, you would start getting Ads for shoes, just from visiting the page on your phone.
Don’t worry, these trackers aren’t “manned” so to speak. They are automated, and they target all internet users spanning across the globe.
If you want to block these Analytics from Google, and many other companies and websites that deploy them … Get the following Addons for your browsers on both your phone, and your PC.
1. Ghostery – Blocks Annoying trackers such as this.
Ghostery Browser Addon2. Adblock Plus – Blocks unwanted Ads.
Adblock PlusAlso deleting cookies and internet history from time to time is good to do, just remember to bookmark anything you want saved before deleting internet history and clearing cookies.
Any Google app that is running while your computer is on will transmit information to Google in your case it was about the bulk flashlights you wanted to sell. Any Google app that is running on your computer whether you are logged in or not will transmit what you are doing to Google. Sorry dude that’s just the way it is

Sounds like google account which is used on PC and Phone.
You can use VPN exclusive internet access, No script for Firefox browser, Peer Block, AVG antivirus, regular Malaware checks, etc. But also think about getting rid of gmail and all google products for that matter.
Problem is that once you are logged in you stay logged in for conveniance reasons but it is all connected now.
If anyone thinks i am paranoic, … Microsoft just paid 26.2 billion cash for Linkedin, … for a frigging database of people where they worked and who they know. Anyone thinking this data doesnt get resold is naive.

Also, there are other search engine services out there, that don’t track you. I’ve been using DUCKDUCKGO for a couple of years, never had any problems with you, they don’t track you like Google.

Yes. And it’s easily understood.
If you use gmail…. it’s “free”. Right?
But when something is “free”, YOU are the product.GMAIL / Google knows what you’re talking about. If you’re logged into Google or your gmail account and you browse the web, it knows what your interests and searches are about.
So they present you with “targeted” ads which are more relevant to you and your interests.
EXAMPLE:
I was logged into google and recently spoke about “motorcycles”. I got my license about 3 weeks ago, I even did a search for “Ducati”. When I arrived at mgtow.com I saw an ad for motorcyles and motorcycle gear.
This is has nothing to do with our website.
This is Google serving you targeted ads. When you see google ads, there is a little triangle in the upper right corner of the ad which says “Ad choices”. There you can change your settings to say “DON’T SHOW ME TARGETED ADS”.
It seems “creepy” because you have to wonder how the f~~~ this is possible?? But it’s not really creepy when you understand it.
That’s why Google gives away GMAIL for free and wants you to use their search engine. They want to show you the most relevant ads.
If you keep doing what you've always done... you're gonna keep getting what you always got.Let me guess, OP. Does your phone run Android?
Android insists you link a Google account with your phone. So if you use the same google account on your computer, it will reflect on your phone.
". . . elle, suivant l’usage des femmes et des chats qui ne viennent pas quand on les appelle et qui viennent quand on ne les appelle pas, s’arrêta devant moi et m’adressa la parole"—Prosper Mérimée
It depends if you use the same account on your phone as on your computer because it logs your history.

Anonymous3Let me guess, OP. Does your phone run Android?
Android insists you link a Google account with your phone. So if you use the same google account on your computer, it will reflect on your phone. You can get rid of google stuff on the android phone by rooting it and deleting the apps and google play services and play store. But be careful, that means, that you have to manually download and install apps (and play store website on PC does not serve you the apk files) so you need to use some “apk downloader” sites. Then copy apk file and install it. Some apps do not work without google play. And of course there is no gmail or calendar any more (or probably in mobile browser, if it works) And since the system wont upload (leak) all your contacts and whatever of your data (without you really knowing) to google servers, a system crash does really mean losing data. So you need something like Titanium Backup, and back up the phone and copy everything to the PC.
It depends if you use the same account on your phone as on your computer because it logs your history.
You do not have to use Chrome. Nor have you to “log in to chrome” to use it. And there are other chromium browsers, which are allowed to start by default in private browsing mode. (Comodo Dragon, Chromodo for example, and these have the same functionality, compatible with the same plugins, etc.)
I do not even know, why this “history” and similar features are so much integrated in deep into anything? I can bookmark pages that I like. And I can sort my bookmarks in folders. Also, why does my phone keep a call log? Why do software log the last few opened documents? Who in the world uses browser history to browse, call log to call, and “recent documents” list to open files? It is just annoying my privacy.
And about ads. I don’t mind if there are a few ads. But please do not track me, do not analyze me, and do not cover the page or use jumping-blinking flash-animated and processor-intensive ads that eat up my laptop battery on a travel. These are why I’m blocking ads. And, anyway, who in the world does click at ads on websites at all? I never clicked them, I can search stuff I want to buy.
And for search, there are many alternatives too. My favourite is startpage.com with privacy and https.
Same thing happened to me today. Internet shopping , now every ad is for that very article.

Anonymous3I’ve done some data mining. It can get pretty deep technically.
As far as I can imagine, advertising companies see people like, symbolically speaking:
-almost “naked” in terms of everyday privacy
It is written on their belly, what they do, where, why, how much, what is their clothes size or religion or political views and all else,
-with their income and debts written on their face,
-with ropes among them representing contacts, and papers hanging on the ropes with text of all messages of the past few months or more.Do you want to be in situation? If you have “nothing to hide” does that mean that you have to walk on the street naked with all your data written on you and floating around you in the clear?
This big data (and it is literally called that) is “calling” for abuse, in many ways. See, you have nothing to hide, but if you post your vacation posts real-time on social media, and not have privacy settings because you don’t care, your house or apartment is clear target for burglars, as well as your wallet is clear target for advertisers. (You can always buy cheaper and better stuff if you think long enough about it instead of just clicking an ad.)
and if they tell, that “the mass data collection is just to target ads” Why can I not select the topic of my ads manually, and they leave my private data alone?

Anonymous1Yep, if you’re logged into your Google account with an Android phone and on your PC, then you’re guaranteed to see the same ad content across both devices. This is how they track you to serve you ads, know where you’ve been, etc.
Couple of things you can do:
– Use FireFox or some other secure, private browser (not Chrome)
– Dump the cache/cookies/browsing history on a daily basis
– Log out of your Google Accounts on your PC and search using some other search engine (duckduckgo.com or even Bing, but Bing is M$, so the same s~~~ all over again)
If you really don’t want to be tracked, get a phone that uses an OS that isn’t Google or Apple based (this is hard if not impossible if you want a Smart Phone).

Anonymous3– Dump the cache/cookies/browsing history on a daily basis
Not this way, that’s what I was talking about. Set the browser to start in “private browsing” (incognito) mode, stuff you would have to delete does not even remain after you close the window. And set the browser to disable third party cookies (or all cookies outside your own home made white list)
