Hi guys. I’m bored. Is anyone else here a huge history nerd? Let’s just make a thread about the coolest historical facts that we know.
Coolest Historical Facts I Know
– The modern word “bear” was originally a euphemism. The earliest Europeans had a word for “bear” that was similar to the Ancient Greek “Arctos”. Early Germanic people superstitiously believed “If you say the name of the bear, he will appear.” Thus, the bear was called “the brown one” and this evolved into the modern word bear.
– In the old days, Brazilians said “when snakes smoke” instead of “when pigs fly”. When World War 2 began, a Brazilian politician said “We’ll enter World War 2 … when snakes smoke!” Eventually, they did enter the war and the official symbol of the Brazilian military was a smoking snake. The Brazilians don’t use the phrase much anymore now.
– In his private writings, Hitler revealed that he admired Islam and he thought that Christianity was too girly. These were not released to the public until after his death.
– The plays by William Shakespeare are full of dirty jokes. During his time, the French viewed him as a vulgar, classless buffoon.
– The Indo-European language family contains nearly all European languages … and Hindi. The language is surprisingly similar to Ancient Greek in terms of structure.
– When Shaka Zulu’s mother died, he was so upset that he killed a bunch of women just so other people would understand his pain. He also killed several female farm animals, leading to starvation. This is what led to his murder and the end of his reign.
– The first Europeans to set foot in Australia were Dutch sailors. They called it “New Holland”. They eventually abandoned it because they thought it was worthless and so the British took it.
– When the Vikings visited northern Canada on their voyages, they encountered an ethnic group call the Dorset. When European explorers re-discovered Canada later on, the Dorset were gone. It is believed that the Inuit killed off the Dorset in a massive genocide.
– The oldest Founding Father of America was Ben Franklin. He was in his seventies at the time. The youngest founding fathers were sixteen. Many were in their twenties.
– There was a rather huge age difference between Socrates and his student Plato. Socrates was put to death when he was 71. Plato was only 29 at the time.
– Socrates was against writing because he wanted people to memorize things “Just like I did in the good old days.”MGTOW: because you can (and should) say anything about a woman as long as she isn't within earshot
