Convert your furnace to waste oil (clean burn)

Thought I would post this information I stumbled across seeking another furnace outside airboot system.

I did such a great job on my custom made dual sealing vaulted R20+ garage doors that the furnace is starving for air now and smothering itself out because the garage is now air-tight, it’s also sucking from the damper making it smoke.

The one I installed in my house furnace is working like a charm, faster ignitions, immediate airflow, and thermal locking the furnace by not allowing air to “suck through the firebox” fuel efficiency too as the air supply doesn’t fluctuate from changing inside outside pressure changes ie wind.

Anyway I ran into some waste oil burners that now bolt to your existing furnace, some are kits that you convert your own #2 heating oil-gun over to waste oil or buy a real good clean burn system for $1,500 to $2,000.

I have a breeder tank for biodiesel that I went through all the efforts of aquiring it and learning how to make bio-diesel but faced paying $3 a gallion for veg oil filtered down to 4micron, BILLS~~~! it cost $1.00 in ethanol for each gallon of biodiesel, plus KOH (potassium hydroxide), $4.00 a gallon? At the time diesel was 4.75 WTF! So I built a hot~~~er hydronic rocket stove that runs on plastic wood and used motoroil about 80,000 BTU when running on all three fuels, loosing about 35,000 BTU up the stack but making another heat-exchange/condenser to miser my exhaust temperatures perhaps 200deg lower. I pickup used motoroil by the 55 gallon barrel from various sources! FREE, a word I LOVE!

Anyway I have a spare beckett AFG oilgun I may convert to first for a steam cleaner.

Seriously, I enjoy industrial arts, machine shop, sheet metal plainishing, polishing, and duplication, construction (all phases) and the latest 5 year head crushing in chemistry which I knew nothing about, couldn’t tell you what an atomic number was to save my life! All so I/we can make our own plant food from the purest compounds (within reason) some s~~~ out there is purified so much, that as soon as you open it (outside a controlled environment) it becomes contaminated, the real scientific stuff for scientists, @ 100s’ of dollars for a small jar, some s~~~ is 100s for just a gram. I don’t go that far! Just trying to keep the petrol chem and heavy metals out of it. Best peppers I EVER TASTED! I can visually look at a fertilizer and tell you what kinds of compounds are in it (mainly the hydrate number, hepta, penta, di, and mono hydrates by the texture of the product, and believe you me IT’S ALL TOXIC METAL and petrol chemical compounds that can turn your soil into toxic sludge clay that won’t drain from all the chemical reactionary binding. I’m cracking into organics too just for fun.

Did it because of the fertilizer co. that sell you toxic s~~~ for big loot prices! So now I’m taking it easy(hard) doing what I like by turning this condemned forest into a working mini-farm of self sufficiency. I stopped giving a s~~~ about the authorities the day I was PLACED under CEASE AND DESIST in my f~~~ing HOME!

That looks like more than just a nozzle changeout. It looks like a forced induction system too. Have you put a heat exchanger on the stack to preheat the air supply before losing that heat up the chimney.

I added just such a system to a 50 year old natural gas furnace (still running – they don’t build them that good any more) and dropped my gas usage by about two thirds (which isn’t entirely reflected in my gas bill thanks to all the government mandated tacked on flat “fees”).

Basically I replaced the flue with some coaxial pipe, tee’d that off through a heat exchanger, boxed in the old firebox, and ran the inflow into that with high volume low pressure fan. The only even slightly tricky part was putting in a small circuit to, among other safety oriented things, prevent the furnace from gassing up the burner until the blower is fully up to speed. Works great. Last winter I had it running full bore and could barely detect any heat coming out the top on the roof. The exhaust just felt slightly humid (so glad I included a condensation trap).

It’s a complete kludge job and would completely rape the warranty if any such existed any more, but it gets the job done. And I no longer have all those tiny drafts sucking in around the doors and windows whenever the furnace fires up.

Next I’m going to replace the pilot light with an electric igniter.

A lot of that $3 per gallon is due to government price fixing.

Most of the alcohol and potash are recoverable, but the equipment to do so is a little expensive. Also methanol is more effective than ethanol and not subject to the same ethanol government price fixing because it’s not drinkable.

All that being said, straight vegetable oil is ultimately more practical as a transportation fuel than biodiesel. Biodiesel only exists because modern “diesel” engines are modified from the original Diesel concept to be picky about their fuel so that can run off petroleum byproducts. I believe the original diesel engine ran off straight peanut oil. If you try to run cold vegetable oil in a petroleum diesel engine, you’ll rapidly coke the f~~~ out of your injectors. However, there are all sorts of aftermarket systems out there for heating up the straight vegetable oil until it’s fluid enough for modern engines to handle it. You start the engine on a small amount of regular diesel from a separate tank, wait for the vegetable oil to get up to temperature, and then switch over to the vegetable oil. Shortly before shutting down you switch back to the regular diesel to flush the vegetable oil out of the injectors before it cools down.

No wonder I like you Sidecar, you’re smart!

I do want to build a heat exchange on the outgoing exhaust flues for both furnaces, My damper and oil gun are supplied with outside air to (stop the negative pressure) I’ve noticed a BIG DIFFERENCE! No drafts and when the neighbors wood smoke starts training on my house I don’t SMELL A THING! BIG PLUS!

The damper being supplied outside air stops that vaccumm source on the structure bypassing the need to draw air from the firebox when its sitting after the 180deg is achieved. Also it stops the chimney from burping and back drafting when the hot gasses first enter and become thermally stratified with the classic smoke burping out of the exhaust flue and damper, woof woof woof until it can “push” the cold dense air stack from the chimney, the damper being supplied outside air allows mediate exhausting as cold air bleeds in to nullify the cold stack by feeding it from the bottom with the cold air to relieve the air weight differential, and immediately stops drafting when the fire stops. Night and day on my heat retention by eliminating all the drafts.

The rocket stove is OUTSIDE and needs none of these modifications, the furnaces “think” they’re outside and function more efficiently, plus cold air is denser adding more oxygen to the firebox but in summer I should open the inlet restriction plate to allow more hot summer air to feed the fire box for thorough combustion, but I don’t care, it only heats the hot water. Even then I’m thinking of adding one of those thermal compressor hot water heaters for summer use. I really f~~~ the Arabs with the rocket stove by burning wood, motor oil, grease, plastic, without smoke or even odor for that matter, the most efficient way to burn wood known to man, I just added to its fuel menu and really turned up the burn temperatures to where only carbon and CO2 is produced, no hydrocarbon left behind from lack of oxygen or combustion temperatures!

$3,500 was my oil bill the winter #2 heating oil hit $3.92 a gallon burning like 10 gallons a day in real cold weather 20 to 30 bucks a day!

I’m not waiting for an energy policy that’s been in the promise basket since the 1973 OIL EMBARGO! That f~~~ing overpaid under qualified Congress can drag their feet all the way to AMERICA’S GRAVE!
