A Connecticut man this week was sentenced to 18 months in prison for not retreating after he was attacked by three people while he was working at a Dunkin Donuts shop.

“I was defending myself,” Jeffrey Sumpter, 21, told Judge John Blawie on Monday at a courthouse in Stamford, Ct., the Connecticut Post reported.

Blawie told Sumpter that he believed him, but had to sentence him under Connecticut law, which requires attack victims to retreat from their attackers. Sumpter’s public defender, Howard Ehring, said Connecticut doesn’t have a Stand Your Ground-type law like in Florida.

Several states in the country have “duty to retreat” laws that apply to people when they’re attacked.

I am sure it makes sense to someone somewhere, even if I can’t understand it. One just wishes that all the liberals who make these laws got the opportunity to be in such a situation and decide to retreat and see what happens.

I can’t wrap my head around not being able to legally stand your ground if attacked. You may have a split second to react, sometimes all you can do is defend yourself.

In Seattle not only can you defend yourself from a physical attack, apparently you can defend your honor. I’ve read that here in Seattle we have a mutual combat law. As long as the other person agrees to fight you can do it. Sometimes the police will referee.

Run retreat still leaves you subject to run retreat law.

Until after so many stops in your progressive retreat the attacker gains numerical odds that in one of his on-slaughters he’ll injure you, then finish you by kicking your face off and exposing your brains on the sidewalk.

What if you can’t retreat? Or if there’s nowhere to run? There are so many mitigating circumstances this law is a cluster f~~~ of ignorance and I expect no less in the Northeast. Of course I live in Florida which has the castle law stand your ground and everything else. That said three on one you’re supposed to run it’s common sense but if you can. If you can’t, than shoot everyone of the motherf~~~ers.

Ultimately it’s this guy’s fault for living in that state. I would never live in any state I could not legally carry weapon and did not have the castle law so I could kill any motherf~~~er that attempts to break into my house or car while I’m there or a duty to retreat bulls~~~ law. Hopefully he gets out of jail and moves to Florida or Texas or Tennessee.

Punished for doing self defence? What the f~~~?

And requiring people to retreat? What if it is not possible?

I mean, in my country’s (Hungary) criminal code it is written, as far as I know :one cannot be punished for reasonable (proportional to the attack) self defence, or so defending other (innocent) people , and cannot be punished, if he/she happens to react in a too strong way due to being scared.

Actually, it is still the less worse version to sit in jail. than to be dead or heavily injured for life. At least he is alive. As some self defence trainers say, it is still better to wait in jail than to be dead. And, it is still better to run than to get injured, if it is possible. Being called a coward, or be dead/injured? Which is better, if one has a choice?

Krav Maga has some good techniques for everyday aggressive situations.
-Always scan your surroundings, know what’s behind your back too. It is always easier to avoid danger. Always be alert.
-In a knife attack one may really get injured, but he may get to decide where. Less worse to injure on the arms than on the body.
-Lean away and kick the attacker, or grab the hand… requires lot of practice… More aggressive version is to grab the hand with knife, and kick it with knee into the attacker.
-defensive move in the same time as counterattack kick or punch.
-kick groin/stomach, finger into eyes, punch nose, bite the attacker, anything possible and comes to your mind first, remember, the attacker wants you dead, react accordingly, fight like a wild animal.
