Jussie Smollett Charges Dropped; ‘His Record Has Been Wiped Clean’

Less than two weeks after “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett pleaded not guilty to 16 counts of disorderly conduct for allegedly lying to police about a hate crime, prosecutors have dropped charges in the case.

Holmes said Smollett volunteered to forfeit his $10,000 bail in the case.

The Cook County State’s Attorney’s office issued a statement after the hearing:

“After reviewing all of the facts and circumstances of the case, including Mr. Smollett’s volunteer service in the community and agreement to forfeit his bond to the City of Chicago, we believe this outcome is a just disposition and appropriate resolution to this case,” the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office stated in an email.

“From top to bottom this is not on the level,” Mayor Rahm Emanuel said. “At the end of the day, it’s Mr. Smollett that committed this false claim.”

Chicago prosecutors on Tuesday dropped all charges against Smollett just weeks after he was indicted on 16 felony counts for allegedly filing a false police report that he was attacked by two men who shouted racial and homophobic slurs.

“This is a whitewash of justice,” Emanuel said.

My first thought when I saw this was that Rahm is just trying to create some confusion. IF he really cares then he should fire the DA and put someone in place that will take the case to trial. Expect nothing to happen and the news cycle to move on. Then it’s business as usual for Rahm and the D’s. Give it two weeks and it will be gone and forgotten.

I also if there is some sort of distraction going on here. As if Chicago Dems have been asked to take some heat on this to get people to forget about 2 years of democratic lies about Russia collusion.

The whole thing is rather weird. There wasn’t anything really to gain politically from this move. And left has been perfectly ok with eating their own and getting in the rear view mirror as fast as possible. Heck, most people had already forgotten about this.

The 10K he put down as bail is essentially a fine. You can’t Forfeit the 10% down on your bail, you don’t get that back.

I’m not sure what crimes were commited in this case, but it wasn’t crimminal which is why a prosecuter might not want to pursue the case. Community service would be the “cost” to the accused of making reparation to the time LE made in examining the case. Also a shrewd move on accused lawyers part as it limits liability toward any upcoming civil lawsuit.

Agreed. If you have to pay a fine and do community service, it should be in exchange for a GUILTY plea. If you are innocent, why would you sign up for a punishment?

Since the case is sealed he may have gotten probation as well but we’ll just never know…

I don’t think that’s true. Falsely reporting a crime, is a crime, and should get more than a fine and community service. I don’t know about that though. Regardless, you’re forgetting about the mail fraud aspect of this.

That’s not what happened. The charges were dropped. You can’t possibly plead guilty to when you aren’t charged of anything. Besides, Smollette made a public statement yesterday that he never lied to the police.

I really hope this is not the end of this. There absolutely needs to be a trial for this. It’s not that I want to be vindictive, but examples need to be set so people clearly know that you cannot commit assault or fake an assault and get away with it.
