Brie Larson officially announced as Captain Marvel
    Entertainment Weekly http://www.ew.com/article/2016/07/23/brie-larson-captain-marvel
Room Oscar-winner Brie Larson is taking the lead as Captain Marvel, marking the first time a woman will play the title character in a Marvel Studios movie.

My childhood memories are that Capt. Marvel was a male adult. Oh well, yet another reason to not buy mainstream entertainment has reared its ugly head!

Her character should be named Private Monistat.

Well, this maybe one of the few times that recasting as a female role for a original male character maybe warranted.

The original Captain Marvel died back in 1982. 34 years ago. And he was never brought back. That said, of the supporting cast of the original Captain Marvel, Carol Danvers, whom became Ms. Marvel, was reintroduced into various comic series twenty years ago. Finally, after a lot of character development, some of it questionable in the tyrannical sense, Carol was renamed, by those at Marvel Comics, as Captain Marvel.

Before Carol became Ms. Marvel, she was an officer in the U.S. Airforce. She eventually reached the rank of Colonel in the Air Force. This meant she was already trained how to fight. There is backstory here.

I was fine when Carol Danvers in the comic series became Captain Marvel. And I am find with Carol Danvers being cast as Captain Marvel in the MCU.

This is like Dick Grayson becoming Batman. Both Dick and Carol have paid their dues. This was a long time in reaching this point. Dick can be Batman. While Carol can be Captain Marvel.

No. It is not. I have been following the Carol/Captain Marvel series for a while.

The female ghostbusters were preachy and sexist towards men.

Carol can be a real hardass, but the character is fair minded when it comes to other people of both genders.

Guys. Those producing the MCU so far have done a fairly good job. So, let us give them the benefit of the doubt that they know what they are doing.

Pepper Potts, Betty Ross, Jane Foster, Natasha Romanoff, Hope Van Dyne, have all been well rounded characters.

I have faith that Carol in the MCU will be as well.

Actually, almost all of the main female cast members of the MCU have been fair minded. I am still hoping for a Black Widow movie.

Until the “captain” is required (and expected) to go down with the ship.
Women don’t ever line up to “play” that part.

    It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s C~~~ain Marvel.

I love the latex glove she’s preparing to fist herself with though….

Well, to be fair, Carol in her comic series was willing to go down with her ship few times.

I admit. I found that glove picture also interesting. It brings a lot of things in mind.

The picture brings to mind Batman’s quote in Dark Knight Returns, where, as he is kicking a gang leader’s ass, he says he is the doctor and this mud hole is an operating table.

It looks like Brie Larson is going to need to tone her body a little bit, and dye her hair blond. Other than that, I think casting her as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel could work.

There is definitely feminism in the MCU. If it doesn’t look so, it’s only because the level is way lower than the vast majority of media out there.

What bothers me most about much of the casting of women in these action hero roles is that they are never required to really look believable. I mean does Brie Larson look like she could kick anybody’s ass? Does Scarlett Johansson? Nope. Meanwhile, all of the men must look like they are on steroids in order to pull it off.

Just take wonder woman for example, supposed to be super strong, but barely has any muscle tone much less appearing to be stronger then even the average man. Ok, so it’s supernatural strength. Then why the hell does superman look like he spends 6 hours a day in the gym?

    Ok. Then do it.

Looks have f~~~ all to do with ones ability to fight.

What’s at play here is societal conditioning of what looks strong based on peak physical fitness. Women have less muscle mass so they aren’t going to be bulked out. Besides do you want to see a hot feminine chick or brutish bull dike?

I agree with Faust. Having a female Captain Marvel is no biggie. My beef is they screwed the pooch with the casting. Brie Larson just isn’t right. They should have went with Yvonne Strahovski. But I also understand they are going with the “it” actress who just won an Oscar over the one who actually looks like the character.

Teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime. Teach a feminist to fish and she will accuse you of patronizing her, claim she knew how to do it anyway and that even if she didn't, she could easily work it out without the help of a man.

‘Looks like character’ is usually the better way to go. I have a friend who is a huge comic book obsessive (he got the Rabbitohs into the Marvel Universe. True story) and his biggest beef with the MCU is using people who don’t look the part.
