Mayor wears same suit for 15 months – and no one notices

Richard Stewart said he wore this same dark blue suit for 15 months without anyone noticing.

The mayor of a Canadian town revealed that he has worn the same “boring, dark blue suit” to meetings for 15 months in a bid to highlight “double standards” in the way men and women are judged on their clothing choices.

Richard Stewart, who has been mayor of the British Columbia town of Coquitlam since 2008, wrote on Facebook that he started wearing the suit in November 2014 and tried to see how long it could last without anyone saying anything.

“I went into my closet and picked out a plain, off-the-rack, boring, dark blue suit,” Stewart said. “I’d wear that suit to every Council meeting until someone noticed, until someone commented on it. I told nobody.”

But on Monday last week, an official commented on Stewart’s suit, he said, ending the experiment.

“Of course, I can’t imagine anybody suggesting that a woman could get away with wearing the same outfit for more than a year. But clearly a man could, and did,” Stewart wrote, admitting that he did get the suit dry-cleaned.

Stewart said he got the idea from Australian news anchor Karl Stefanovic, who did the same experiment for a year after observing the daily emails and criticism his female co-anchor got over her wardrobe.

“And we’ve heard sometimes very public (and even nasty) criticism of “WHAT is she WEARING?” or “She wore that same outfit a couple of weeks ago,” Stewart wrote.

“Where this different standard presents a barrier, where this limits the advancement of one group over another, where this prevents our democratic institutions from better reflecting society, we need to remove it,” he added.

Sooo…he’s discovered that people pay attention to what women wear, but not what men wear…big f***ing deal…and in other news, the sky remains blue…

    Fascinating.

Here’s the thing “Mr. Mayor”. Go on Yahoo anytime and read the news headlines….. then read them again tomorrow…. then read them again the next day.

    Notice any pattern???

    • “Man jumps from hot air balloon in orbit – highest free fall in history”
    • “Kobe Bryant signs record deal”
    • “Men build submarine larger than an aircraft carrier”.

    …. .and then it’s…..

    • “Kim Kardashian steps out in in strapless black dress”.

Like that’s her biggest accomplishment — “what she’s wearing”. Women get CELEBRATED AND CONGRATULATED on what the f~~~ they are wearing. A man actually needs to DO something in the world to make the front page.

Caitlyn Jenner got a “medal for courage” for putting on a f~~~ing dress. But the last time he collected fame and a medal, he had to be the fastest man in the world.

    There’s your “double standard”.
You’re in charge of running a city and you haven’t figured this out yet?

They didn’t notice your f~~~ing suit because it’s what a man DOES. If the world waited for Kim Kardashian to actually do/produce something worthwhile and significant, she would never make the front page.

I think KM is onto something there but its more about women than men. Man wears same suit for a year and no one gives a s~~~. Men and woman only care about what he is saying as a councilman.
Woman wears same suit for a year and men don’t give a s~~~. Women notice immediately and proceed to rip her to shreds behind her back and then gossip incessantly about it. Women don’t give a s~~~ about what she says as a councilwoman, they are more interested in gossiping.

Who is sending in emails complaining and commenting on the female anchor’s clothing? Women mostly? Maybe some gay guys? I highly doubt straight men are taking the time to email a network to comment on the female anchor’s clothing.

I think KM is onto something there but its more about women than men. Man wears same suit for a year and no one gives a s~~~. Men and woman only care about what he is saying as a councilman.

There’s a twist to this. He’s white knighting as if women are some “victims of a double standard”…. but his little experiment proved that women are the BENEFACTORS of a double standard. Even when women whine about “double standards”, they wouldn’t have it any other way.

WHITE KNIGHT: “Why does society not give a damn what a man wears??”.

MGTOW: “Because society does not give a damn what a man wears. NOR SHOULD THEY. Shouldn’t you be asking why does society place so much importance on what women wear instead? Then ask yourself… is it because they don’t contribute anything else of REAL value?”.

…… but that would make the white knight very uncomfortable.

That’s why women (and gays) will make a big deal about how something is “chartreuse” instead of f~~~ing GREEN. If they can’t do that, they are out of a job – tomorrow. The Fashion industry is the most useless s~~~ anywhere, and all it is is WOMEN placing importance on s~~~ that doesn’t matter. “That lapis lazuli skirt really sets off her eyes. Should you be wearing black shoes with a brown belt?”

    F~~~ off.

Who installed your bathroom and running water and electricity? Men. How about your WIFI connection? A Man. How about the roads and the cars? Men. Who stocked your grocery shelves? Trucks driven by MEN. Who will show up to help you when you call roadside assistance at 2:00 AM? A man.

Why would anyone give a s~~~ what the f~~~ a politician is wearing in the first place? It’s a GOOD thing nobody cares what he’s wearing. It gets pretty tiring listening to a man in a suit (which is no different than any other man in a suit) commenting on what men have known since the beginning of time: It’s doesn’t matter what the f~~~ you are wearing.

    It’s not SUPPOSED to matter.

If you keep doing what you've always done... you're gonna keep getting what you always got.

It’s horrible logic as well. So he proved nobody cares what he wears…and that magically proves men care about what women wear?

As well, he picked the most uniform like outfit that isn’t a uniform that you could find. It’s practically the equivalent of a female nurse saying “I wore the same scrubs for 15 months and nobody noticed.”

    Ok. Then do it.

He’s forgetting that’s why men all show up to formal events wearing a tux – which is exactly the same s~~~ as the next guy. What separates the men is not what they are “wearing”. A woman can’t even tell if the guy is rich oil tycoon, or if the tux is rented.

People care what women wear (and blow it all out of proportion) because that’s how one woman differs from another — >>> what she’s wearing. Women actually consider wearing the same dress to a formal event as some kind of tragedy. “Oh my God she is wearing the same thing as me.” How horrifying.

The Mayor’s little experiment turned out to be more profound than even he realized.

You know who’s saying that? Women! I’ve never seen any man criticize a woman’s style unless she was unhygienic or unsanitary. Women are the ones obsessed with fashion, always wanting men to notice that they did something different with their hair, ect. So, nice experiment. I guess this is supposed to be proof of patriarchy, huh? No, it’s proof that women are the ones who say that s~~~, women care. Men don’t give a s~~~.

you won’t see a bunch of men gossiping over Cindy’s new dress.

“OMG, Mike! Did you SEE Cindy’s new dress?!”
“OMG girlfriend! That’s like soooooo tacky, lol. Plus it makes her boobs look small!”
    ^^^^^
This s~~~ doesn’t f~~~ing happen. Women are shallow skanks, good job Mr. Mayor, but like everything else, this is men’s fault.

Goddammit I’m with you on this! C~~~s only have to do a very mundane thing to get the headlines, while men have to be extraordinary to maybe get a f~~~ing footnote in the papers.

Just another tampon at the base of the wall.
All that’s really cared about is that a man shows up to work and produce.

^This. All you ever hear is women complaining, “I got my hair done, and my husband didn’t even notice!” or, “I brought a brand new petticoat, and I’ve been waiting all day for my boyfriend to comment on it!”

So he didn’t. Cry me a river. It’s because it’s not important, love. We’re usually too busy thinking about things that are. And when a female anchor wears the same outfit and gets grilled about it, what do they do, they blame men. After years of bitching that men never notice anything.

    Yay for logic.

Reminds me of an old I had who had up his dress code from business casual, to suit and tie after a promotion. He was happy about it since he didn’t need to think about what to wear in the morning. Personally don’t like wearing suits as they aren’t comfortable for me, but I wouldn’t mind wearing a comfortable uniform at all.

People care what women wear (and blow it all out of proportion) because that’s how one woman differs from another — >>> what she’s wearing. Women actually consider wearing the same dress to a formal event as some kind of tragedy. “Oh my God she is wearing the same thing as me.” How horrifying.

That happened to my sister at prom. She had the same dress (different color) as her friend who they were sharing a limo with. It’s been about 30 years so my memory is foggy, but I believe there were tears shed. I just remember as 10 year old wondering why it was a problem.

And then there’s the most important day in a woman’s life….her wedding. She wears white to symbolize her innocence (ha!) and no one else is allowed to wear white. It is even considered bad form to have a better dress then the bride. The bride gets to decide what all the bridesmaids wear…and they’re supposed to pay for the dress. On the grooms side…well it’s not uncommon for the bride to tell everyone what to wear. However, it’s not bad form for a groomsman to have his own tux and wear that if he prefers.

    Ok. Then do it.

brilliant posts from everyone as usual on here

and I had to find this thread to post on as just this morning one of the women at work commented on what someone was wearing – it was a positive comment for a change but it still made me think of this thread straight away

I honestly never notice these things and as others have said it is WOMEN who do. It has zero to do with us
