I’ve always had an interest in wood working, and I recently bought a home with a garage. So now I have the space to do what I want. As a Mgtow monk, my hobbies keep expanding and are getting more ambitious. In the past and more recently I have wanted to build my own cedar canoe. This is a big step up for me but makes sense, as I am surrounded by lakes and rivers.

A canoe equals more hunting, fishing, camping. It can carry a lot of gear. There is something about that quit slide through the water, and that sexy curvy leaf shape. I guess Ive caught the canoe bug. Well The nice thing is that if I do get into building a cedar canoe, there won’t be any c~~~s to stop me.

Why not buy one and spend more time using it than building it? I would cut corners, use plywood, sheetrock screws, sealer, and make it rectangular! 3 hours! TOPS!

You are correct, as a beginner I would need to start small and simple. It is ease to get caught up in the eye candy type canoes I see online. It’s like canoe porn

Quite a few people around here have kayak. There are also lots of canoes but I just don’t see them quite as much anymore as kayaks. Both have their advantages. Kayak really paddles so very easy.

I like the light weight thin plastic canoes, they’re easier to carry! Impossible to repair! Fiberglass is repairable but heavy! Look on Craig’s list for something, all kinds of near finished projects show up there and sometimes free! I paid a $100 bucks for my last one! My expensive one came untied, drifted away and went over the falls! It was weeks before I realized it was missing!

I can see how it would be nice to have a canoe to bang around a little, kind of like the old beater truck.

Absolutely! If you ever looked at the bottom of my canoes you’d wonder why they’re not leaking from all the scratches dents, scrapes, and gouges (depending what they’re made of)

I had an aluminum one years ago and they’re the most durable it seems.

Canoes suck in the wind unless you have two people or sit in the middle when you’re alone! The wind blows them off course real easy when you sit in back alone. No wind, no problem.

They’re perfect for retrieving amphibian RC aircraft, just cover the edge with foam pipe insulation and set the wings on the foam letting them hang over. It balances perfect and doesn’t damage the plane.

I actually totaled an aluminum canoe going down some rapids once. It tipped and folded over a boulder. Also been in some sketchy white caps. Good and bad times all at once.

Go for it! If you take pleasure in building it, then build it! Best part — is there a wife to nag and stop you? NO!!!

I'm going my own way. Maybe I'll see you there.

Yah that’s what I was thinking. I might enjoy building the canoe more than I like canoeing itself. It sounds like a challenge I would enjoy. “Float damn it” ha ha

    IMHO
I would suppose it depends on what or how you want to use the canoe for.
Open water canoes (apparently more commonly referred to as touring canoes) are better for traversing and utility (hunting/fishing/cargo duties) on lakes, wide rivers, and “ocean waters”. The ones I have used have been wood (a bitch and 3/4 to carry alone with ones gear) and aluminum (much lighter) both are slightly wider, higher, and longer that river canoes.
They can be properly handled by one person, however it is challenging, (at least in my experience it was).

River canoes are usually the better choice for general purpose/leisure activities, unless you plan on paddling an elk or moose across the lake or river. They are a tad more forgiving than open water canoes and it is also much easier to portage with it. They can also “survive” white water a lot better.

I’d agree with MG-Tower on getting aluminum for ease of repairs and weight.
Mind you, for me there are very few as aesthetically pleasing or nostalgic as a well maintained birch bark canoe.

Opinions vary, it just matters what you want to do.
    Safe paddling.

There was a time in my life when I gave a fuck. Now you have to pay ME for it

Thanks for the input Grumpy. I agree the birch bark canoe is the best to look at. What an art form. Birch is an amazing tree.

I canoe and have one of those sit on top Kayak things.

The thing about a wooden canoe, is they can be heavy.

My canoe is an old one made out of abs?

Made for white water. It has an inverted keel.
    But Im a lake guy.

The wind blows you all over the place! Hah

Yah I think I now what you mean about the canoe made of abs. Don’t forget the back and shoulders. It can be a work out on a windy lake.

I always liked the look of these canoes. I don’t know what it is about them, but canoes like this somehow command respect.

I don’t know if you can make a single person version.

    The abs is indistuctable.

Its a great upper body work out.

Wow it looks like it was made from one very large chunk of wood, very impressive.

My uncle has an old 1970s or early 80s aluminum Grumman canoe. He used to take it out solo on extended wilderness paddling trips, though it is easier to manage with two people. It’s dented to hell from scraping on rocks but it has never once needed to be patched. I spent many hours in that thing as a kid during summer vacations. I always enjoyed the low, silent glide through the water.

I’d say, get a used canoe and enjoy it while you hone your skills and build exactly what you want. You’ll be able to satisfy the urge to get onto the water now, and you’ll get more insight into what sort of design and features you’ll want in your custom canoe.

I have one of those and a flat bottom row boat, aluminum pipe frames and perhaps ABS ?

It’s not the thermal plastic injection mold like some of the others (polypropylene/ethylene) I saw one that was broke in half and repaired with a band of the same kind of material and some kind of adhesive and I think it was riveted along the rim.

I had a Grumman too! I accidentally hit it with the snow cat when it was burred in the snow. T-Boned the nose sideways! I gave it away and it still floated.

I have to say I like the thin ABS plastic with aluminum tube frame because it’s the lightest and rides higher in the water than anything else, thereby making it the easiest to paddle and maneuver.

I bet this would go to the bottom if capsized! Don’t get snagged on it, otherwise you’ll drown!

    BOAT SAFETY FAIL!

Not the kind of woodworking I am into, but the project sounds interesting. From personal exp, dust masks buy them and use. Master the craft, it will be a thing of beauty.
