As an American, I really enjoyed this thread. I had some good laughs reading some of these comments.

USA is so much like the old British Empire. The reason the torch got passed off to America instead of “Great Britain” is because of history.

Britain has too much history, you see. America is a new country with a new “fake” mythos. That is why USA can be the first truly Global Empire. We don’t have any history to bias against us. Its a blank slate. Our culture was manufactured by Advertising Companies on Madison Ave.

You could never do that in the old country. There is a culture going back thousands of years. Its hard to train them to be good little consumers, with that sort of cultural legacy.

Also USA is racially diverse, so we can represent the entire Globe. A truly Globalist Empire, Britain could never have accomplished this on their own.

That’s true, but over time we represent more and more different cultures.

My point is this, America is blank slate. Our culture is flexible. It can be whatever Madison Ave. and Hollywood want it to be. You can’t say that about any other country.

The people, who have been bombed Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq etc.

They have a very strange relationship to the USA. Many of these people immigrate to the USA. They mix their race and their descendants become “American.”

Hummus and Middle Eastern Cuisine became a big part of American culture during the wars in the Mideast. If you go to Dearborn, MI you can see how the USA is changing. We merge with the cultures that we have warred with. That’s what they call the “Great American Melting Pot.”

As for your second point, USA does build things. We build McDonalds, Walmart, Movie Theaters etc.

As to whether or not the US is an imperialist nation depends how you define empire. We may just be using an old fashioned definition in the UK.

Empire is from the Latin for imperium -power. An imperator is the man who has power over an army -the general. I won’t bore you with the politics of why the Latin world for general became the word for emperor, when Romans first got one but it has that root.

If we are looking as Empire as being where you can exercise your power (which the root of the word would allow), America exercises its military power over a very wide area and in this respect it is an empire.

Successful empires assimilate cultures. Its why the Romans achieved so much and why the Spartans achieved so little both in terms of empire and legacy.

I will be bold enough to suggest that the US being such a young country, its style of empire is not yet fixed. Much may yet happen. The US may yet build things and own far off lands as old empires did. It may become isolationist as it sees it is not getting enough back from its “empire” and vanish from power. Its all still unfixed. At the moment they are making much of being the protectors of liberty and that goes against possessing nations but much can change.

Remember gents in 100 years, we in Britain fought two world wars start to finish and decided war was very bad, lost the British empire and decided we were bad to ever have an empire, let homosexuals marry, gave women the vote, created the welfare state, went from being a great manufacturing nation to buying it all from elsewhere … the list of unforeseen changes is huge. Much can change in a short time. The US has power and potential. Much may change.
