Clint Eastwood cracked a joke at a recent event where he referred to ‘Caitlyn somebody’, and now it’s being censored and the media is all abuzz with discussion about wether he should have said it, and wether it should be removed from the final broadcast of that event…

I wonder if maybe the media is missing Mr Eastwood’s intended point.  Bruce Jenner was a person who did some memorable and impressive things.  But Bruce chose to become another different person.  He even took a different name.  If you accept Bruce’s intent, then Bruce no longer exists.  There is now a person named Caitlyn… who really hasn’t accomplished anything memorable.  Caitlyn has put on a dress and posed for a picture for the cover of some magazine, but there are a great many people have done this, and could do this on a moment’s notice.  As such, Caitlyn is no more memorable than any of the last 50 people who have appeared in a dress on the cover of that magazine (name one of them if you can).

The point Mr Eastwood may have been making is that when you were Bruce, you had done something rare and difficult and extraordinary … and that this would give many people reason to recognize and remember you.  But if you are Caitlyn and not Bruce, have not done anything extraordinarily difficult, and are just someone who literally didn’t exist until a few weeks ago, then you are going to have to do much more than put on a dress and pose for a picture in order to expect, or deserve, to be remembered the way Bruce was.  Otherwise, not having done anything more than dress up and pose, you have not given anyone much reason to remember you for very long at all…

If in fact Bruce did all this for some attention, I believe that will be successful… but only for a while.  I think it was Betty Davis who was credited with saying that, “today’s newspaper is tomorrow’s toilet paper…”.

Look, it's not my fault that tornado dropped a house on your sister. Now get back on your broom and get your ass out of here... and take your monkeys with you
