This is the exact argument I always end up making whenever one of my otherwise bright friends tries to get on the whole “you’re anti-immigration… but we’re a nation of immigrants” kick.

Yes, we are nearly all descendent from immigrants… but most of those immigrants (colonialists and natives excluded, of course) came to this country by legal means. They rang the doorbell, so to speak, and the people already here looked through the peephole and let them in. My grandparents changed their name to appear less Italian, they learned English, adapted to american culture and, as soon as they could, got out of the ethnic enclaves and integrated with the rest of the people until the only way you could tell where they were from was by sitting down with them to dinner. They worked hard, paid taxes, built businesses, bought property, sent their kids to school and busted their asses in the hopes of achieving the “American Dream” that they all believed in and came here to seek.

Prior to colonialism, all the great conquerors generally tried to integrate territories and create empires through assimilating the conquered people. The British were the first to use a different system, one wherein they made colonies rather than actual extensions to a large empire, and where they purposely kept the people separate. The US Imperialist power of today is based on UK colonialism but has a few other tricks on it, and really involves occupying foreign areas with military bases rather than extending a large borderless empire like in the past.

So it appears to me, because the UK’s conquered territories were never assimilated, it looks like those people instead flocked to the UK, in their native forms, and are now invading. If they’d been assimilated they probably wouldn’t have done that, and there would be no such idea of “purity of the white race” which the other conquerors never gave a crap about. Most of the world is mixed blood, because all the other conquerors were busy integrating everyone.

As an American, the whole thing amuses me, and yes, I will laugh at it. I still have some relatives in the UK, I suspect if things are that bad they will probably flee over here soon enough.
