The book currently on my table is called “Demon Night” by my favorite sci-fi author-writer of all time .. J. Michael Straczynski

.. about a small town caught in the middle of a centuries old war between supernatural forces.
Anything by JMS .. also anything Babylon 5 related, is something I want to see or read.

My boss gave me a copy of Candide, have no idea what’s it’s about but it’s my next read. He spoke highly of it, respect him so I’ll give it a try.

Glancing at the stacks beside my bed and chair…

    Currently:

The Dawn Watch – Maya Jasanoff. It’s a biography of Joseph Conrad focusing on how his career as a merchant marine officer formed the foundation of his writing.

One Soldier’s War – Arkady Babchenko. Author was in law school, got drafted into the 1st Chechen War, survived, and then volunteered to fight in the 2nd Chechen War. He writes very little about what combat he saw and instead discusses the day to day lives of short service Russian soldiers on base and at the front. From colonels on down, the Federation army is comprised of violent criminals brutally beating and starving the ranks below them. When finally given the chance to fight Chechen “rebels” instead of preying on each other, the results weren’t pretty.

    Recently:

The Blue Nile – Alan Moorehead.
    Harry’s Bar – Arrigo Cipriani.
Japanese Destroyer Captain – Tameichi Hara.
    Literary Rivals – Richard Bradford.
Homage to Catalonia – George Orwell.
Sado: Japan’s Island in Exile – Angus Waycott.

1st, The Book of Five rings by Miyamoto Musashi.

2nd, Awakening the Buddha within – Lama Surya Das.

3rd, The art of war – Sun Tzu.

The first book i recommend it because it really opens your mind on how you can better yourself and apply strategy to every aspect of your life not just including war, also it changes the way you see personal development.

The second book i recommend it because it was written by an American Jewish man that went to Tibet to learn about the Mahayana school of Buddhism, also includes meditations at the end and through the book you learn not only the teachings of Mahayana and the man known as Buddha, but you also learn to detach and see life in a MUCH more bigger scale than what you can trying to filter it through the poor lenses of your “self”.

Also to note, Zen Buddhism was what helped Japanese Samurais overcome the fear of death and anxiety before combat, look up that to!.

The third book i really like it because it teaches you the mindset a leader MUST have when guiding hes troops and coordinating attacks and ambushes, i find it the most accurate that you are going to get when it comes to ancient forms of warfare that some are still applied today in modern times.

These 3 books will transform you from an alpha into a superman XD nah, but they are pretty good reads and rereads to be honest.

Your boss has excellent taste. Thanks to him you’re going to be reading one of the premier works in Western canon.

Candide is coming-of-age story. As such it’s of the picareque or satirical/comedic type rather than the blidungsroman or dramatic/serious type.

Let me recommend you have a guide to the novel on hand. Apart from his historical references which are obscure to most people like the Lisbon Earthquake of the 1750s, Voltaire is also going to reference many ideas and concepts from religion and philosophy which are no longer taught. A guide will help you catch Voltaire’s many satirical observations disguised as Candide’s naivete.

3rd, The art of war – Sun Tzu.

Every other person seemingly has a copy of Sun Tzu but damn few actually read it, fewer can understand it, and fewer yet can place it any historical context. It’s one of those book which requires you to read several other books first in order to gain anything from it.

When you become aware of the book’s historical context, you’ll also become aware of the book’s many historical inaccuracies and anachronisms.

Sun Tzu is also like Socrates in that we know what other people say Sun Tzu and Socrates said and nothing about what Sun Tzu and Socrates actually said.

    3. The 10x Rule – Grant Cardone

Interesting -let me know what you think.

From his you tube videos I’ve always though Grant Cardone was full of s~~~ making millions selling snake oil.

His sales methodology wouldn’t work in UK selling a complex high value solution to business clients with a brain.
