Some 600 computers used to “mine” bitcoin and other virtual currencies have been stolen from data centers in Iceland in what police say is the biggest series of thefts ever in the North Atlantic island nation. Some 11 people were arrested, including a security guard, in what Icelandic media have dubbed the “Big Bitcoin Heist.” A judge at the Reykjanes District Court on Friday ordered two people to remain in custody.

—–600 computers stolen,…..that would be the inside job or government take over. No one gets away with breaking in and pulling out 600 computers. If this happened at all.

600 computers? That would require a few big trucks. And many hours.
And data centers use big rack-mounted computers all wired up to each other.
big power cables, security systems and so on. It would also require special knowledge of that one data center, and a forklift, if the racks can be moved in one piece at all.

How did they know which computers to steal? must be some inside info, or someone who has already been there before. It is not like that they were searching all the center for a bunch of servers with a given ip address, or ones with GPUs or ASIC miner parts. that would take lot of time.

And it is all wired to the admins and internet all over the world. How did an admin not notice the first missing computer immediately? How much time for some security guards to go there? maybe half a minute? (I guess there may be armed guards and admins in such place…)

It may have been something else than just a highly organized crime. It may be government take over. They “arrest” a few people for the show. Then they hide them and give them new identity, and repurpose the powerful computers for mass-surveillance and encryption-breaking (depending on what is inside), and hide it in some government office. Wire up the power (a few megawatts) under some non-disclosure contract / disguised to something else, from a powerplant. Disguise it as heating and air conditioning a big office building, for example.

For the stolen bitcoins if any, secret agents are smart enough to “tumble” them, to be not possible to track back to the original address. Then use it for any secret stuff.

Only a government has the capacity to pull off something like that.

    The question is, which one?

It’s an island where can they hide. If anyone plugs them in, the power drain is traceable.

If the “computers” were actually mining bitcoin and not an “alt-coin” using video card GPU’s then they would have been ASIC miners like these.

Each one of those ASIC “Antminer S9” miners use 1400 watts to run so 600 of them would be easy to track in power consumption. Each unit is about 1500.00 base price. No bitcoin would have been stolen by the government because of how the miners work. They mine to an internet pool (10’s of thousands of miners pool the effort) which then outputs their contribution in computing power to a public bitcoin account in fractions of bitcoin. So whoever owns those miners lost that money but the bitcoin is safe unless they torture him for the private key to his account.

As was posted below, a mining unit is quite small. They are powerful and generate heat. One article I saw speculated organized crime stole them.

Actually, on another note, ideas to do mining units that double as room heaters have been proposed:
