BHP Billiton wants half its workforce to be women by 2025

I have mates in mining and it’s already a common complaint that there’s too many female ‘seat-warmers’ above-ground or not in the pits doing admin, HR, or in cushy public relations jobs back at head-office. The places are figuratively and literally ‘top-heavy’ with too many chiefs and not enough Indians doing the actual physical labor.

Many blokes ‘down-the-hole’ are all for equality, but not when the women leave the hard, heavy, dangerous work to the men rather than operate a hydraulic ram or rock-drill. It’s no surprise that women ‘miners’ generally avoid the s~~~tier jobs like paste crew and bolting and meshing in favour of sitting on their arse in an office chair or truck rather than doing any heavy-lifting.

But hey – from a multinational corporation perspective – if you open up more mining jobs to half the population imagine how far down you could push mining wages? Just curious to see if BHP Billiton can hit their 2025 target with actual women ‘down-the-holes’ rather than with more paper and pen-pushers above-ground.
