Just wondering if anyone had any thoughts as to which linux distro’s are the best.

I’m sick of submitting to windows surveillance bulls~~~ and have made the commitment to switch over.

I just bought myself a sweet new linux-compatible machine and it arrives any day now.

I read, write, stream lots of video, edit video occasionally and multitask a lot.

I’ve already used ubuntu but have been hearing good things about mint, linux lite, manjaro…

    Any advice would be appreciated…

I had similar feelings as you Sovereign. I tried Mint Cinnamon having no prior linux experience because of its somewhat familiar look to Windows 7 (not an Apple fan, and the Ubuntu interface had a decidedly Apple feel to me). I really only have positive things to say about it. It’s supposedly less lightweight than an XFCE distro but it is rather polished and easy to use for those of us without a plethora of linux experience.

Some features take some getting used to, but it’s really pretty straightforward for the most part… I never had any install or package issues. My biggest issue was getting the right drivers installed so I could connect to my Wireless AC, but that was at a time when AC was just coming out. Still only took me about an hour to figure it out.

As I’m sure you know, with any distro you use, the community/forums are both incredibly active and helpful with whatever issues you may encounter… chances are you’re not the first one to have that particular question and your answer is just a quick search away.

I’ve heard good things about manjaro also… may give that a try soon.

There was a thread about this a few months ago. I recall that it looked like it contains excellent advice. A search should dig it up.

For a desktop, you can’t wrong with Linux Mint.

Linux Mint is great for beginners. It has a feature in the taskbar that will allow you to update all your programs automatically without having to close anything out in the process.

    Other distros are:

    Debian

    Sparky Linux, Game Over Edition

    Linux Lite

    Netrunner, Rolling Edition

    Fedora

    OpenSUSE

The best Desktop Environments for me at least are:

XFCE and KDE. I can’t stand any other environments. Keep in mind, KDE is the most customizable as well.

I tried switching to Linux full time, but I can’t. The thing that bugs me the most about Linux is the screen tearing. It’s a f~~~ing bitch. It makes everything lag.

In the future, I’ll probably end up switching to a Macbook. As much as I hate Apple, I hate Microsoft even more.
