I am in the midst of completing a Science concepts pdf as it relates to trades applications.

I thought there may be someone who could help me with the final self-test problem, as follows.

“A hydraulic press is used to lift a 1000kg pump so a millwright can bolt it to the piping system.
The hydraulic press handle applies force to a piston with an area of 5cm^2 ; the press piston lifts the pump with an area of 80cm^2.
How much force will the millwright need to apply to the handle to lift the pump?”

The answer I ended up with was 612.5 N

    Found Mechanical Advantage:
    MA = A out / A (in)
    80cm / 5cm = 16cm

    1000kg x 9.8m^2 = 9800 N

Found Effort by using the equation MA = R/E
    E = R/MA
    9800 / 16 = 612.5 N

    Any help would be appreciated.

I’m really, really lousy at math.

But first calculate how much hydraulic pressure is required to be produced in the press large ram cylinder now that you know the surface area of the ram cylinder piston and the force required to lift the load (1000 KG).

Once you’ve determined that pressure, you now know how much pressure you must generate in the small pump piston. You already know the surface area of the pump piston, so you should be able to calculate how much force is required to be applied to the small pump piston in order to generate the necessary pressure.

Think of it as ‘mechanical advantage’ but created hydraulically. The press uses a relatively small amount of FORCE on the small pump piston to generate relatively a high amount of hydraulic PRESSURE. That high amount of hydraulic PRESSURE when applied to the large surface area ram piston will give you the FORCE required.

The pump converts ‘FORCE to PRESSURE’ and the ram cylinder converts that ‘PRESSURE to FORCE’..

    Autolite,
Thanks I’ll give that a try.

I couldn’t really follow your math. No where does it show ‘PRESSURE’. It had me confused…

I’ll try and give a very simplified exampled. Think of a hydraulic jack.

The jack pump piston has a surface area of one square inch. Apply a FORCE to that piston of ten pounds and you will have generated a hydraulic PRESSURE of ten pounds per square inch (PSI).

Now apply that hydraulic PRESSURE of ten pounds per square inch to a large hydraulic ram piston that has a surface area of one hundred square inches. That PRESSURE of 10psi applied to a surface area of 100 square inches will now generate a FORCE of 1000 pounds when applied to the larger hydraulic ram.

Hydraulically, you’ve converted an initial force of ten pounds to a resultant force of 1000 pounds…

CHeck out AVE. Basically, you are multiplying that force.

Let me find a video to explain this.

FOr now, think of it just as you would if you had a BIG lever!

So there is a Formula to it, but.. I can do it, but I SUCK at it. But I think there is calculator.

That should get you what you need.

AVE. He speaks it like a PRO!

Odd that this is here. I was actually tempted today to post here asking for help with my APACHE MOD REWRITES. Where can a man go when stackexchange doesn’t get it done?

    APACHE MOD REWRITES

I have not even used apache in a LONG time. So, I’m out of the loop.
Hope this helps. Dark Ryu might be able to help. This is something that was put up a few years going into this. I only did minimal stuff in the past. Hope this helps.

Hijacking? My God. The “dickhead” virus has spread everywhere. It’s the black plague!!!

How about – this website isn’t here to solve your f~~~ing physics homework problems.

Why don’t you just be thankful to the people who posted to help you.

    There’s wierdos everywhere.

    Sheesh.

Both videos seem to indicate not only a value for psi but a value for effort distance, or distance travelled by the piston.
The problem I posted does not indicate these, only resistance, 1000kg ,the area of the input piston, 5cm^2 and the area of the output piston, 80cm^2.

Earlier Im pretty sure I thanked Autolite by saying “Thanks I’ll try that” , and that any help would be appreciated.

Sorry if I came off like a jerk.

    Sandals, your creating drama now.

iMickey503, after closer inspection you did actually post stuff in relation to the thread, sorry.
