The shortest version of this I can make:
Haven’t gone through school, trying to get back in, thinking of delving into psychology/psychiatry because it interests me. I REALLY want to write and draw comic books, but I feel like that’s something that I can do on my own time after I’ve earned some money, got off the ground a bit. Additionally, mainstream comics are becoming too feminized anyways. Anyone here got stories/advice from the field?

Maybe I can help.  I dont know what your credentials are or your education level so the steps may or may not apply to you.

Psychiatrist is 4 years of college (undergrad for a bachelors), then 4 years of medical school followed by internship, residency, then I believe a fellowship.  You must take the mcat and a host of classes to just sit for the mcat so you can apply to medical school, be prepared to be in 250k+ in debt when it is all said and done.  Some programs allow no bachelors but exceptional undergrad work, 3.8 gpa or higher and near perfect mcat score and you can jump ship and not need a bachelors, although that is rare. You can prescribe medication.

Psychologist, either PhD or PsyD ( a lot of choices in phD and PsyD doctorates you can get) is usually 4 years of college, (undergrad), then another 4-8.  As far as getting into a graduate program, you can get a degree in anything, but must have core psych classes, like statistics, cognitive, developmental, etc.  Each graduate school will have a list of those classes you need but for all intensive purposes you can major in anything.  Most if not all all psych programs require a 3.0 or higher to start graduate work.  Some schools require you also take the GRE when submitting an application.  You might be able to prescribe certain types of medication depending on state law if your a clinical psychologist and in a practice.  Be prepared for 150k+ easy on student loan debt.

You can not do anything with a bachelors in Psych regarding good somewhat paying jobs in the mental health field.  Maybe $10-14 an hour if youre lucky.   I have seen some hit the holy grail and score 15+ per hour but it is rare in the field of mental health with just a bachelors.

Any other questions, feel free to ask.

That’s too bad about the psych degree. I was hoping that if I ended up changing my mind, I could use that to get a different job. I don’t mind school, but I think a lot about if I’ll like what I get into or not. I’m currently out of school; I have about a quarter under my belt so I’m somewhat behind for my age. I wonder if anyone here has recommendations of fields to consider exploring?
