Not long after he was ordered by a court to pay nearly half of his annual income to his ex-wife, Dr. Jan Nemec wrote a final letter to his daughter.

“I wish I had the opportunity to quit my job and be a gardener in Costa Rica,” the daughter, Katerina Nemcova, recounted to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “But I can’t do that,” Nemec told her, “because I would go to jail and that’s terrifying.”

According to the paper, “Dr. Nemec refused to submit to what he saw as oppression and took his own life at his Swissvale [Pa.] home on May 8.” He was 54.

It’s not entirely clear why Nemec believed he would be jailed for changing careers or substantially lowering his income. This explainer of the circumstances under which alimony arrangements can be modified says voluntarily relinquishing a job can qualify, although not always.

But Nemec’s daughter said he was outraged by the ruling and believed he had only one option left. (PennLive was not immediately able to independently verify the terms of Nemec’s divorce and divorce settlement.)

Nemec, a native of Prague in what was then the communist eastern European state of Czechoslovakia, emigrated to the U.S. in 1993 as a fellow in cardiology and electrophysiology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. He was later recruited by UPMC in Pittsburgh as an expert in complicated heart procedures and moved to the Pittsburgh suburb of Swissvale to work for the organization as an academic physician beginning in 2006, his obituary explains.

His profile on UPMC’s website was no longer active as of Friday.

According to his daughter, “Freedom and liberty were all very important to him. He didn’t want to conform to the norm. He’d been planning this [his death] for at least three years — we now know this.”

In one final jab at the legal system he so resented, Nemec reportedly waited until his divorce had been finalized for exactly 30 days before ending his life and leaving the majority of his estate to the organization Doctors Without Borders.

“He was always very, very anti-communist. This was definitely about his moral principles,” his daughter told the Post-Gazette. “He thought this was a poorly designed system and just didn’t want to be a part of it and would rather give the money to a worthy cause.”

Nemec’s obituary says he is survived by his daughter, Katerina (Sydney, Australia); son, Jakub (Minneapolis, Minnesota); mother, Dr. Marcela Nemcova (Prague, Czech Republic); and “a legion of colleagues, devoted patients, and friends.”

A man without dignity and courage to defend his rights is a woman by default.

He’d been planning this [his death] for at least three years — we now know this

So I guess the divorce proceedings drag on for more then three years.

There must be one hell of legal cost, and the c~~~ have no more walking wallet to extract from.

There is no magic in MGTOW, just recognition of the truth and logical decision how to avoid dangers. The red pill is but the truth, it is no magical potion. Do not think in this modern world men have no longer have natural enemies, men are prey to women and government.

He should have offed his bitch ex wife before he committed suicide, now she is still alive and will likely make another man’s life a living nightmare.

I am angry that a great man was forced into this. By a c~~~. and by a system.

I wish we could have talked to him. You know this man had an incredible story. Now all gone.

how many more lives could he have saved? our society is worse for losing him. instead we keep a worthless c~~~ s~~~bag murder by suicide c~~~.

his alimony was half of what he made, now 54, he had 20 years to go. 20 years of paying an undeserving c~~~. I lose my s~~~ for having to pay for 3 more years. f~~~ he did the math and came up with millions of dollars sucking the life out of him…his education, his experience and his everything and some c~~~ gets half? his ability to retire. The right to rest after years of service all gone.

    f~~~. f~~~ f~~~, I am so angry right now.

leaving the majority of the estate to doctors without borders…good.

I hope he left the c~~~ exactly $1. Bitch. If it were me, it would be 100 dirty pennies. rolled in horses~~~ and beaten with a hammer, then soaked in p~~~.

C~~~s want out of marriage, fine, get out but take nothing with you. Get out and go the f~~~ away. Let great men like this live for f~~~’s sake. The other doctor off the GWB in New York, and Robin Williams, same story…We keep losing good men, and all there will be left is s~~~. Fine, choke on the s~~~.

There is no appeal in divorce court. It is always a financial death sentence. f~~~.

    Feminism be damned.

Driving somebody to suicide should be a damn accessory to murder and punishable as such by the laws in that area. Another brother lost…

May he find peace in the next world.

    Very sad.
I am not sure why he thought he would be jailed for moving to Costa Rica. They do not extradite for alimony or child support.

Remember how a woman, who might become a Dr. someday, was let off the hook for stabbing a man, lest her possible career as a surgeon be ruined? Well this man was already a long standing, highly regarded cardiologist who probably helped thousands of people, and never attacked and stabbed anyone. Why wasn’t he given consideration and not ruined?

TO put a face to a name: RIP Dr Nemec

I don’t like the idea of alimony at all. I mean if you or she leave the marriage, then that should be over with. Why is it that she leaves and he has to pay her? It’s a scam and there’s a lot of women who go in for this! This whole alimony thing is unfair no matter who it is, and in cases like this, it leads to death.

Another nail in the coffin of humanity. I hope the Pa. court system chokes on his blood. Didn’t the article say his ex was a doctor, too? Then why did she need alimony. Someday these laws will be repealed. Until then, don’t marry, don’t co-habitate. Palimony is just as bad. Research a case about a man named Chouchilla. It was long before the Lee Marvin case made headlines. When the public looses respect for the government they’re forced to live under, revolution follows. The feminists should be afraid. They should be VERY afraid.

And his loyal chocolate lab, Med.

He sounded like a really good guy.
I wish he had found us here. We could have helped him.
He could be on a beach in Costa Rica with Med right now. Hopefully Med found a good home.

I’m not a violent person but I’d have just offed her on my way out of the country to go be a gardener if that is what he wanted to do. Maybe you’d get away with it, maybe not, but you could always just hang yourself in a jail cell if they catch up to you.

Oh well…its just one of millions of reasons to never get married, unfortunately this one ended more tragically than most.
