I am of the generation that grew up with cartoons like GI Joe, Dungeons & Dragons, Transformers… but recently I have been interested in Anime. I have only seen a few. Ghost in the Shell (1995) being my favorite so far. I have seen Akira and a few others as well. What I want to know is what are the classics at this point? A top ten list would be great. Also, links to the best sites to see stuff for free would be cool to. As far as specific genres I would really like dystopian/post apocalyptic stuff, and zombie stuff. But really the best of the best is what I am looking for.

    Thanks guys-

Based off what you’ve said you’ve seen, Neon Genesis Evangilion is probably something you enjoy, and it is a dystopian anime. Legend of Galactic Heroes is amazing, but a large time investment (113 episodes approximately). It features the decline of a Democratic government and contains many philosophical and political themes. Also it is possibly my favourite anime which is surprising considering I usual find those types of shows to be pretentious and overrated. Another anime, which a didn’t particularly care for but fits your dystopia request is Ergo Proxy. The atmosphere is toxic so most of humanity is ruled by a small elite group in an enclosed city.

There will always be the elitist fans that make arbitrary shows and films to watch before you can be considered a “fan”. So I always take some recommendations with a grain of salt. However, Here are some that I’ve enjoyed the most, in no particular order.
    -Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust
-Neon Genesis Evangellion, series plus OVAs
    -Death Note
    -Code Geass
    -Tokyo Ghoul
    -Cowboy Bebop
    -Hellsing
    -Black Lagoon
    -Attack on Titan

There aren’t too many anime I like, but these are good all on their own. I can’t stand many of the arbitrary tropes that are in many anime, and they’ve only grown more annoying as I watch more. Tokyo ghoul is my recent favorite.

NHK ni Youkoso! – NEET life 🙂
    Death Note – mgtow
    Highschool of the Dead
Steins;Gate – the plot is Amazing!
    Hunter x Hunter (2011) – mgtow
Sword Art Online – Season 1 only, awesome theme
One Punch Man – definate mgtow
    Trigun
Prince of Tennis – mgtow, and pretty motivational
Chobits – sorta mgtow, in that women being replaced by robots
    Gintama – mgtow for life
Bakuman. – mgtow; as it’s all about making manga / anime
Log Horizon ( first season rocks, 2nd season meh )
Aoki Hagane no Arpeggio: Ars Nova – bit on the mangina side
Noragami – bit on mangina side, but has a great theme
Overlord – pretty close to mgtow
    Charlotte
Full Metal Panic! – Mechs 🙂
Mirai Nikki – definate red pills
    Robotics;Notes – mechs 🙂 7/10

    If your into dystopia,

    Death Note
    One Punch Man
    Sword Art Online
    NHK ni Youkoso!
    Magi: The Kingdom of Magic
    Trigun

would be the top choices of the list, no quite the walking dead 😛 most arnt dark; anime is rarely dark, but when it is… its O.O

If you liked the Ghost in The Shell movie, I suggest the GitS Standalone Complex series. 52 episodes and one movie. This is a good series that shows how to do a strong woman right. The direct sequel to the first GitS is okay. I have not seen GitS Arise.

There is Cowboy Bebop (26 episodes and one movie set between episode 23 and 24). And if you like Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star is pretty good.

If you are feeling some old school, 1980’s cyberpunk the Bubblegum Crisis OVAs are okay. Not the TV series, but OVAs.

If you are looking for a more modern, dark, action series, I have found Black Lagoon to be a very good, but very dark series. That series really gets going at the end of episode seven, onward.

Note, all the english american dubs to these series are good. So, if you don’t want to read subtitles, you will still be okay.

Also, if you are a classic G1 transformers fan, you need to check the IDW comics. Start with the “Chaos” storyline, where the war ended in the series and things started getting interesting.

And if you liked Akira, the manga version is a lot longer, but still good.

Also, check out the animes Nausicaa Valley of the Wind and Princess Mononoke. Both are very different then most stories and fiction. But, both have good art and good characterization.

Not much I can add to this list, but for some gory anime, add on Akame Ga Kill and Deadman Wonderland. NOTE: I would NOT watch these with your kids. In fact, you shouldn’t watch these with ANY kids, including the dog. The cat might be okay with it, but poor poochie ain’t gonna like it.

The previous lists are a great starting point. I’m surprised no one mentioned Ninja Scroll. I’ll also recommend Berserk and Bean Bandit/Gunsmith Cats.

Here’s a site with both dubbed and subtitled Anime as well as western cartoons. I’d recommend Batman the Brave and the Bold as a fun campy cartoon.

Don’t know if I could list 10, but I would say most of my favorites are probably classics at this point.

Fist of the North Star – dystopian/post apocalyptic if I remember correctly, but its been a while.
Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust – Just badass
Ninja Scroll – Remember this being a good one, but theres a love story in it, would be a negative if you dont like those.

Hey, thanks guys, that’s a lot to check out. I got looking into some of these tonight, and Deadman Wonderland is my favorite so far. I just finished episode 3. It is a bit like Running Man and Escape from L.A. And Shiro reminds me a bit of River from Serenity. Good soundtrack as well.

Try to look into the era of the late 1990s/early 2000s and their anime. That was a great era for me (the Toonami era). Look for things like:
    Cowboy Bebop
    The Big O
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
    Trigun
    .hack series
    Naruto series
    Bleach
    One Piece
    Rurouni Kenshin
    Immortal Grand Prix
    Samurai Champloo

    Just to name a few.

just watched I My Me! Strawberry Eggs today.

wanted to add that into the list of anime to watch; it has a lot of redpills in it.

Amawa Hibiki is a young man just out of college, with an education to be an athletics teacher. He’s been having a hard time finding a job since he graduated, so all his money has gone towards living expenses. When his landlady demands his first payment to live in her living establishment upfront, he heads to the local middle school to get hired as a teacher. However, the principal refuses to hire him without hesitation. She will not hire men as teachers and makes it clear that she hates all men, saying they put no love into their passions and work. Amawa does not give up and with the help of his landlady, he crossdresses as a woman without a second thought, and gets hired, so he can earn money and also prove the principal wrong. Now, he has to keep his real gender a secret, and avoid strange situations, including the affections of his students

a little hard to get a hold of, but i think its worth the watch.
