Has anyone had strange encounters in the woods?

I do a lot of hiking, camping, running alone in the forests. lately, I’ve been sort of freaked out as several times, there has been dead silence around me, not a sound to be heard. I felt like I was being watched.

Did some search online and there is a ton of material about strange encounters in north America, especially north west, Canada, Alaska, where tall, enormous bipedal creatures were seen.

Yes, I mean bigfoot, and another creature, now called dogman. It looks like a significant number of people, especially hunters (bow hunters) go missing or are found dead all over north America.

It sounds ridiculous, but, there’s so many sightings on the net that it’s hard to ignore.

It’s changed the way I now view camping alone at night. I always carry “protection” with me, but, still, I’m worried. I was really getting into nighttime hiking, but, I’m rethinking that. Kind of freaked out.

    Anyone else…

    God bless peace and freedom.

Never. In all of my life at the family cottage, the only story we read about in local news is how a couple of snow-mobilers fell through the ice and were found in the spring.

I know the “dead silence” you’re speaking about. It’s like you can hear the blood pumping through your veins – and rushing in your ears like a seashell. You get used to it quickly. And then you really notice “the noise” of every day life.

Please. Fear mongering is why horror movies exist. I’m used to camping since I was 2, and we boated out to an island and slept/camped there for days. I have no such fear about it, except what one might expect. Snakes, bears, etc.

Nature ( and the elements ) will get you before “Bigfoot” ever will.

If you keep doing what you've always done... you're gonna keep getting what you always got.

    Kind of freaked out.

That doesn’t sound like a “relaxing” way to spend your free time. Maybe you need a new type of “escape” ?

I don’t spend much time in the backwoods or back country hiking and hunting but my son does. He has never mentioned anything like that.

You know, it really doesn’t take a whole lot of research to realize that these type of sighting claims are just all pure bulls~~~!

I’ve spent lots time in and around the woods. I’ve encountered bears, coyotes, moose and wolves. The only really unsettling thing was when I was face-to-face with a squirrel that I’m pretty sure was bi-polar…

Not as ridiculous as it may sound — check out interviews with David Paulides, et. al. Stories of strange disappearances in the woods and wilderness exist across many cultures, with some cultures even having “instructions” on what to wear and not to wear in order to avoid attracting the attention of “whatever” is in the woods. Personally, I believe that Paulides’ personal beliefs somewhat color the methodology he uses in his investigations… but there ARE some weird patterns.

Actually it is as ridiculous as it sounds. You just need to develop an ear for bulls~~~.

I have a funny side story though. In the military we would often train with visiting foreign military personnel. We were working in bear country so we gave the foreigners some bear spray and told them that it was a bear repellent.

They complained to us that their guys didn’t like using the stuff. Apparently it stung when they sprayed it on their arms… 😀

Yes, only once, when I p~~~ed on a bobcat below me I didn’t see in the bushes. It started growling with that distinctive cat sound but larger, I roared straight back at him and he took off like lightning, I could hear him hitting the shrubbery as he fled, I was stunned and relieved at the same time. It all happened within a matter of seconds.

Bears freak me the f~~~ out! I hate when I see or hear them, they’re big with big teeth a even bigger claws, I go the other way immediately! Moose don’t scare me but never the less they’re truck size and can easily squish you like a bug!

The most scary thing I happened across in the woods was a rabid racoon on the trail right next to water at 12:00 NOON! I knew what it was and that it was rabid upon startling him, he turned to hiss at me the same time I was turning to RUN! A hiss’n’run! if I wasn’t looking out for snakes and the likes I would have walked right into him! I was counting my blessings that day!

I certainly don’t think that Bigfoot is coming down from the mountains and snatching hikers away… and I’m sure that most disappearances can be attributed to natural causes — but there is an element of strangeness about some of the disappearances (people being found, usually dead, in areas where search-and-rescue teams had already looked, etc. Is it bears or other predators? Maybe so.)

I’ve encountered many (black) bears but it’s the brown bears (grizzles) that you really need to worry about. Moose bother me more than bears though. Moose are the assholes of the forest…

I once called a woman “Bigfoot”. That was the most dangerous encounter that I can recall.

The ‘freakiest’ thing that I’ve ever seen though was this huge flying squirrel thing. It was like a really big flying marmot going through the trees. I’m betting that it was something like that that might have started the ‘moth-man’ stories…

My “fear” is a recent occurrence. I’ve hiked alone in many wilderness regions, including Yellowstone national park, Adrinodack, etc. I’ve been to Alaska, Nova Scotia. Yellowstone was a time that I was definitely very uneasy because I ran into a grizzly but it was over 200 yards away, so I felt safe.

I even started hiking in the middle of the night with I live deep in the woods, even buying nightvision equipment to supplement the hobby. I love being outdoors. I used to feel home there. The uneasy fealing is very recent, within the last week and half with suddenly, I just didn’t feel “right.”

Remember, that there are still vast areas of North America, especially Canda and Alaska that are so remote, you won’t find people for hundreds of miles. These areas are associated with a lot of “activity.” I personally don’t discount anything.

Just to end this conversation so you know where I’m coming from:

A woman was attacked here in the woods, ears sliced off, bite marks all over. I met her. Spoke to her. She needed several reconstructive surgeries. The type of animal that attacked her was still not clear. She swore that it was not anything normal to the area. There are no bears or large cats in that area. The detective I spoke to (it was part of my job) believed it was her boyfriend’s rottweiler. There was a history of domestic disturbance calls to their home so they thought it was another case of battered woman. She swore it wasn’t the dog. So, who knows. I’ve hiked alot in these areas, and the story has stayed with me.

    God bless peace and freedom.

There are a lot of interesting stories out there. A lot of good people who used to be avid hunters, outdoorsmen have changed their lifestyle because of what they saw.

I always try to be open minded. The world is alot more than it can seem.

    God bless peace and freedom.

I’ve heard some sounds coming from the woods, in the night, that I still can’t explain. It was a maniacal, loud screeching or screaming in the trees. Probably some sort of bird I’m thinking.

We have coyotes here where I live. Sometimes they can get a real chorus going in the middle of the night. One of the weirdest things though are the ‘woofing’ sound a bear will make in the woods, in the winter.

Sometimes bears will temporarily come out of hibernation early and go prowling around before going back to bed…
