I visited a marijuana dispensary/shop in Los Angeles to purchase a few ounces of weed and accidentally “pocket dialed” from my business suit pocket. The call went directly to my clients answering machine.

Now my client has a 10 minute voicemail recording of his attorney buying marijuana. The recording contains my name, address, ID numbers, conversation with the window girl, the bud-tender girl, discussing strains, highs, grams, cost, everything.

The recording is clear. There is no question I visited and purchased from a marijuana dispensary. Thankfully this is a small client. I only make about 12-16k per year off this one account. So it stings. But it wont make or break me.

Nonetheless they have it on tape and I’m extremely worried about Monday morning. I went by their building today with a “confidential letter” to drop off upstairs to get past the security guard. I was hoping the office was accidentally unlocked. But f~~~ if it wasn’t locked and everyone home for the weekend. It’s one thing if can say the guard let me in. But I can’t break in. Also the voicemail is on a box. But I don’t know if it’s password protected.

When they get the voicemail recording Monday morning they’re going to know it was accidental pass it around the office. I’m certain I will lose the entire account. Not to mention they now have a recording they can share with anyone they want.

It doesn’t help this client is behind on their bills and there have been a couple of minor f~~~ ups recently which are not my fault. Nonetheless, from their perspective – now the blame is easily attributable to me. “See, Michael’s smoking weed and that’s probably why XYZ happend”.

I know there is no point in mulling over this but I am. F~~~!

What would you do if you found out your lawyer, investment advisor, stock broker, CPA, Engineer, Doctor, or basically any professional was smoking weed?

    You’d probably fire them right?

    🙁

Isn´t there a medical reason you could feed forward as an excuse, like a glaucoma, migraine, crohn´s or something else to justify your usage?
    That´s what I would do.
It´s s~~~ that this drug is so ill famed, it used to be in a lot of medicine up until around 1920. Heroin was invented to replace it.. what a success.

No, I would not fire them but that is probably because I´m smokin myself. Smart people should know that this does not affect your work and if your customer has been happy with your work until now why should he bother?

I wish you the best for getting out of this story with the least possible damage to your reputation.

Yes. Medical MJ is legal in CA. But in reality it’s a complete joke. Everyone knows 99% of the people using have no legit medical need. You just walk in, pay $100, say whatever, get your card, permit stamped, documents, and go shopping.

Thanks. I’m trying to think up something. Even if he believes I have a “legit” need I’m 99% sure I would still be dumped. 🙁

That’s what I would do if I found out someone I was paying for serious work was smoking.

I’m one of the few who’s disciplined and responsible with use. I only use recreational on the weekends or at night when there is nothing going on the next day – or on vacation. Maybe 0-10 times a month at most.

Doesn’t matter though. They won’t believe it since there are 1000 losers for every 1 Joe Rogan.

Yeah but strictly speaking you know, you could still be in the 1 % group with this.

Naah c´mon, as your work does not lack quality why should it have an impact? Customers and employers should not worry about s~~~ like that really as long as your work is ok. It´s your private life.

I´m a responsible smoker too, 2 reefers a week on the weekends for stress relief. It is so screwed alcohol is ok, but marihuana is the demon.

Best case scenario is they call you Monday morning and say, “Dude! Got yur message. S’cool, yo.”

That is my hope for you!

I bet nothing happens, they’ll skip to the next message when they realize it’s garbled call, trick is make sure you call from someone’s phone and make sure there’s a message after yours so they less of a reason to let it play…

I’m not well schooled in law, but if your client were to divulge confidential medical information (such as your use of “medications”), even if it were accidently obtained, I believe that violates some sort of privacy statute, like HIPPA. You might consider researching that this weekend and drafting some documents in advance.

I’m glad the whole weed craze doesn’t exist in my country.

Not a f~~~ing thing. I’d fire them if the weren’t doing their job. 0 f~~~s given what they do in their off time.

It remains crucial to never forget “what caused this”.
IMO it could just have easily accidentally recorded a conversation wherein you called said client “a s~~~” for fully legitimate reasons.
Or it could have accidentally recorded your setting up a meet with three women to film porn….!
I’d change communication units or software or get some sort of software lock installed within it.
I’d not recommend achieving this via a new outer case for it as this could be construed as a confirmation of sorts.

    What caused this?
    Could it recur?
    Can it be prevented?

It refreshes a new threat for all of us; Laydeez will bait guys into conversations and then engage in not so accidental pocket dialing.

First, LOCK your phone to reduce chances of accidentally dialing. Set auto lock to 1 min. When done with calls, turn the phone OFF. Then it will ALWAYS require passcode.

As to the weed, about 13% of Californians smoke it. I see it no different than smoking cigarettes or drinking. In fact, I see MUCH more abuse of these LEGAL substances. Very few people smoke so much weed that it causes lung cancer… I personally don’t toke, but know MANY people who do, and even more did it in my youth. I think it’s bad for you, especially if done to excess, I see nothing wrong with it at all in moderation. The biggest problem with Marijuana is the insane culture of locking people up for drug use in the US — a.k.a. the ‘Drug War’. Keep in mind anytime the word ‘War’ is used, that means WAR on our personal or economic freedom. It’s kind of a Politician’s Code Word. ‘War’ on Terror = new government departments, foreign wars, and defense spending. ‘War’ on poverty = increased taxes and benefits causing multigenerational welfare. ‘War’ on drugs = lock up half of young black men, give them a criminal record so they can’t get jobs = racism + the prison-industrial complex.

As to what to tell the client, why lie? I’d tell them straight up, you engage in recreational drug use, just like some of them probably smoke or drink, and it doesn’t impact your work. If they question it, ask them how many court appearances or filing deadlines you’ve missed — when they say none — that should confirm it isn’t impacting your performance… You could also say you were getting it for a relative with cancer, etc if you must lie..

Somehow I rubbed against the phone when i got out of the car and it dialed thier number. its the third or forth time its happened. I hear “Hello … Hello”. then have a quick laugh i pocket dialed.

there must be something on an iphone to download that can stop this from happening again but i dont see it online ..

WTF? You are buying things like that and have your phone on you? That’s totally stupid. Leave it at home so your position does not get recorded.

I received a call from the owner last week. He wanted to talk and was re-questioning two f~~~ ups. I could tell from his voice he got the pocket dialed message. He wants to meet and “discuss his account”. F~~~. His account is overdue. Dammit. I knew this would happen. He is going to use this as an excuse not to pay. At this point I will feel lucky if he pays his bills and leaves.
