I’ve been recently to America. Noticed one weird thing. When I meet people and say that I’m a Lithuanian, most people look at me as if I were an empty space. When introducing myself as Russian I hear “Oh, Mother Russia! Tovarishch!”
Whatever you might say, I see much interest. May be suspicion or even thrill. But anyway: “contact has been established”. Will you share your opininon to this? What is it: the flashbacks of cold war work in mysterious ways?

The term “Lithuanian” can mean a couple of different things in the U.S. It can mean ethnic background, or a member of the “Lithuanian church”. When people look at you, after you tell them, they are just giving you the chance to fully explain which way you are using the word, “Lithuanian”.

I have met several Americans who said “Oh, I love Sweden”, when I said I was Norwegian. So yeah, that’s true. But that happens all over the world though, not just America. In Japan they just scream “Salmon!!!” when I say I’m from Norway… Sigh..

Don’t feel bad. Lithuania is a Country half way around the World that is the size of our State of West Virginia… which most High School Seniors can’t point out on the map.

RoyDal had it right. It wasn’t a contemptuous thing, it was a lack of frame of reference.

I was part of the Cold War, I was watching TV one day while guarding weapons pointed your direction and right there on the National Geographic channel they said the USSR silo they were in was pointed at the city I lived in.

Hell, most Americans from West Virginia can’t find West Virginia on a map. Lithuania might as well be Mars. It doesn’t mean we are unfriendly, just weak on geography. Very weak. Shamefully weak.
I have had friends from Vilnius who were proud of their heritage, and I have read about Lithuania mostly in the context of the wars and the USSR, but it’s not a country we hear a lot about because it doesn’t start a lot of s~~~. The bravery of Lithuanians in the face of first Nazi, then Soviet oppression is inspirational, but is not something Americans are taught.

Most Americans probably can’t locate most of the states if you gave them a map of the country. They damn well can’t locate countries overseas.
