You guys are pretty smart on here, so I have a couple of questions, about random stuff:

    1) I’d like to build an alarm system for my apartment. It seems like the alarm mechanism is a matter of a closed circuit. I’d like to set it up on the windows and door. I’d get a dog, but we can’t have pets here. The neighborhood is marginal. Back in the day, it was a lot better. I don’t want to give the specific reason for the decline, but I’m well aware of it. I chose however to move back here because the value is excellent for the cost of rent. This is a two bedroom, 900 sqft for just over $650. It’s close to everything too, shopping, etc. An alarm would be perfect. I don’t want to buy a gun. I really don’t want to kill anybody.

    2) How often should you rotate tires and worry about brakes? I’ve never been to this mechanic before. They advertise a lot about brakes. But should I need them now? My car has 27-28k miles. It’s a Focus, 2014. Yeah, that one. The first notice about the class action suit offered a little more of a generous settlement. I lost the notice, some weeks went by, and I guess the company decided to change their offer. Not, of course, for the better. Now a lot more time has passed. Will I get anything? And of course they apparently used Takata air bags. They must’ve, I got another class action notice about it. How do they sue a bankrupt company? Is there an escrow account or something?

I guess I can look this stuff up, but I really don’t know much about cars. And alarms…

Not sure about #1 but for #2: I rotate tires once a year on average. Front to back no cross-pattern.
They recommend rotate tires every oil change, so about 4 times a year, but once a year works for me as I get brand new tires every 5 years or so.

As for brakes, the pads usually wear out before rotors, most people change pads and fluid together but you can use a vacuum pump to just replace fluid – use synthetic. Your local brake shop can do this. Yours are probably fine so wouldn’t worry for another few years.

Also, get a gun. Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. No sane person wants to take a life, it changes you forever. But sometimes it’s your only option. There’s always non-lethal round options but that just leaves you open to a lawsuit after. Yes, criminals have broken into house, got injured inside the house and then sued the homeowners and won. As a neighborhood cop once told me “Dead men tell no tales.” Every man has the right to defend life and property.

It’s not a matter of wants. It’s a matter of needs. Or, to put it another way, would you rather let anybody kill you?

How often should you rotate tires and worry about brakes?

inspect every other oil change. Rotate, repair, or replace as needed. Tires and brakes are easy. Why pay someone else for basic maintenance? Do you also pay someone to wipe your windshield?

alarm systems can be defeated. Also, doing anything to modify the apartment may be a violation of your lease.
An easy alarm solution is a motion detector with a 120 decibel siren. These are small, portable, battery powered devices. You can buy this at Failmart or Homey Depot. Hide this device among your possessions, but close enough to the door so you can deactivate it.

Yes, buy a gun. Exercise your 2nd amendment rights. I’d rather have a gun in my hand than a phone on hold waiting for a cop to rescue me. Training and practice can be had at a reputable gunstore/range. Understand how it works and when to use it. Gun does not have to be huge to be effective. The firearm I have is an extremely durable, over built target plinker. Not the best at personal protection, not very concealable. But it is better than nothing and it is very scary looking. A good gunstore will match up your requirements to a good weapon.

Be more aware of the maintenance of your car. There is a manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule. Find this in the owner’s manual that came with the car, or find it online. Autozone will check the condition of your car battery as well as read computer codes.

Tire rotation is typically every 6000 miles. While the tires are being rotated, have them check your brakes. They will measure the pads/shoes and discs/drums to determine how much life is left. Mileage is not an indicator of time to replace. I do a lot of high way driving, and do not use the brakes much. City dwellers go through brakes more quickly.

You can only really use motion detection on internal doors it never works properly outside-triggered by rain, snow, leaves in the breeze.

I’d take a self defence course as well,a firearm is most effective beyond 21 feet, anything closer and you won’t have time to unholster, aim and hit anything besides the broad side of a barn,or worse your attacker disarming and shooting you.

    An alarm would be perfect.

.. also, get two or three inexpensive AC electrical timers that you plug into the wall between the socket and the lamp. Digital timers cost only about ten or twelve dollars each and can be set to cycle down to every few minutes.

Set them to alternate so table or floor lamps go on in different rooms .. on and off in random fashion .. changing patterns; like every twenty minutes to half hour to hour. Sometimes, you might have two lamps on and one off. Varied patterns.

Making it look like you are home is a deterrent. Thieves like to do their thing when no one is around. You can also hook one of the timers to a radio .. to play some music occasionally making the house appear occupied .. even if you are away from the house.

If you are home .. and still want to add some extra deterrence, let the lamps cycle on and off all night long in rooms other than where you sleep. If you use energy efficient bulbs, it will only cost almost nothing .. just pennies of electricity to run this operation.

Just get a few alarm signs and a gun. You could always get a dog as well. Alarm does little these days if it doesn’t alert law enforcement. Most people just ignore them; similar to how people react to car alarms or when someone walks out of a store and that alarm goes off. Once you are properly licensed (and trained) to carry a gun, it will be more effective. Plus, it’s good to exercise your second amendment rights.

    I appreciate the replies, men.

I don’t know about the gun idea. I don’t think God wants it, and also I doubt I could hit anything. I went to the range some time ago, maybe summer of 15 or 16. If I was hitting the target, the holes were all over it. 9mm bullets seem hard to aim. I am kind of like Columbo. He paid a guy $5 in an episode to take his firing range test for him.

The motion detector, if it’s not too expensive, would be great. 120 db is extremely loud. Isn’t that what The Who is in Guiness World Records for, that level of volume? Maybe I should sleep with ear plugs. Then it might not wake me. So if the criminal gets anything, he at least didn’t rob me of a night’s sleep. Assuming I live…

My mom carries a gun. I am on edge when she is around because of that. It’s concealed. Once, she got it out, pointed towards the sink and pulled the trigger. It clicked. She said she knew it was unloaded, and showed me the clip. That didn’t make me feel better. I said, “If you’d had a round in the chamber, we’d both be deaf.”

In the Boy Scouts we went to the range. Dad wanted me to use a target depicting a middle eastern terrorist. This I hit in the forehead. It hung on my wall in my room for some years.

Some guy in the range at that time was firing a very loud rifle. They called it something with “Aut” in the name of it. I had a lot of trouble holding the pistol and being accurate. How that guy could be accurate defied all logic. I imagined the round of that rifle nearly having it’s own will, to hit anyone or anything. Often, it just passes right on through. (Insert White Castle joke here)

Finally, I knew a gun enthusiast back in the day. He liked to talk about firearms. Once, he said, “Don’t worry. People are real polite at the gun range.” I thought, I wonder if that’s the reason you’re such a jerk around here?

    Thanks again for your helps.

With tyres always check the build date as even sat on a shelf the rubber compound derades.

Never buy cheap s~~~ brand as they have poor grip and massively increase braking distances, particularly in the wet.

A good summer tyre choice is dunlop sport blue response or Bridgestone Turanza EVO (the old turanzas were a bit mediocre).

Never over nor under inflate your tyres.

IF yo have 4wheel drive – in snow it make snot much difference to handling and braking unless you have snow tyres.

I don’t know about the gun idea. I don’t think God wants it,

Nobody sane wants to kill anyone. But do you want them to kill you? Having a gun gives you a choice in the matter.

So again it’s not a matter of “wants”. It’s a matter of needs. And having a gun but never needing it is much better than finding yourself needing a gun and not having one.

and also I doubt I could hit anything.

Which is why you practice. And take a few classes.
